| Previous US 430's: Final ROUTE LOG US 30, US 330: 0 - 0 US 14: 16 - 16 |
US 430: Appeared in the 1925 proposed US Highway System plan. Ran from US 30 (now IL 38) Geneva IL to US 12 (now US 14) Crystal Lake IL. When the US route system was finalized in late 1926, US 430 was defined the same. This was addition to IL 22.
Oddly, AASHO sent Illinois their list of US routes and it said US 430 began in Aurora instead of Geneva. Illinois replied that US 30 also went to Aurora. AASHO's revision of this list left it as Aurora. There is no map evidence that US 430 was posted down to Aurora, and no further mention of US 430 at all in AASHO correspondence until 1933. US 430's original north end location is nebulous. US 12 had a temporary routing from Crystal Lake northwest towards Woodstock, while US 12 was planned to head north via McHenry and IL 61, which was not completed at the inception of the US route system. If you believe US 430 ended at US 12 Temp, then that location was the current US 14/IL 31 interchange location. If you believe US 430 followed Temp US 12 East to where it met US 12, that location appears to have been Sardis Rd at Santana Rd. About 1930, US 430's north end was definitely at the current US 14/IL 31 interchange location, as the Northwest Hwy crossing under the railroad was completed.
In March 1933 (AASHO), US 430 north was truncated to Dundee, replaced by an extended US 14. Illinois was going to have US 14 leave US 430 at Algonquin but AASHO talked them into leaving US 430 at West Dundee instead. Today it is IL 31 except US 430 used Main St through Algonquin In November 1934 (AASHO), the rest of US 430 was officially replaced by an extended US 330. Today it is IL 31 except in St Charles US 430 used 2nd/Main/5th. Illinois made the US 430 changes in 1934 without consulting AASHO first (as they did with several other US routes).
When US 14 replaced part of US 430, US 430 was reduced to just 16 miles, which would be the shortest posted US route ever (until Virginia decided to posted a very short segment of US 121 in 2023).
