Creation: Appeared in June 1953 (AASHO) as a new US Highway. Ran from US 64-231 (now US 64 Bus) Fayetteville TN to US 60-231 (now 4th St) Owensboro KY. AASHO mistakenly assigned this as US 331, forgetting that they had given this number out the previous year. US 431 was an addition to: TN 50 from Fayetteville to Lewisburg; TN 106 to Nashvile; TN 65/KY 75 to Owensboro KY. Kentucky had requested US 431 end at the Indiana state line, which would be the US 231 (now KY 2292) crossing of the Ohio River.
