US 330 #1: Appeared in the 1925 proposed US Highway System plan. Ran from US 30-430 (now IL 38) Geneva IL to US 12-20-41 (now just Michigan Ave) Chicago. When the US route system was finalized in late 1926, US 330 was defined the same. This was an addition to IL 6 and was only 37 miles long.
US 330 Geneva to Chicago 1928 Official By 1930, US 330 was straightened out between west of York Rd and east of I-294 in Hillside IL. The old route is a southern abandoned loop destroyed by the IL 38/York Rd interchange. Two pieces of Forest Ln survive from the northern loop. In 1932, US 330 was rerouted to use Roosevelt Rd all the way to Michigan Ave, changing where US 330 ended. Maps are quite contradictory on how the route used to go from Roosevelt to Jackson. Some have it using Des Plaines Rd in Forest Park. Some show Austin Rd in Oak Park. Some show Ridgeland Ave. Others show Central Ave in westernmost Chicago. It is entirely possible more than one was used between 1927-32. In 1933, US 330 was removed from Dayton Ave/IL 59/Garys Mill Rd south of West Chicago. In November 1934 (AASHO), US 330 was extended in both directions: west by replacing US 430 north to US 14 Dundee IL; east by following IL 1 south a few miles, then east as new primary route on Marquette St east and South Chicago St southeast; followed IL 42 south to Lynwood; followed IL 52 east to end at US 30 a short distance later. It appears Illinois unilaterally did the east extension, as it appears on their 1933 Official. In 1934, US 330 was rerouted leaving downtown Chicago. It left IL 1 Michigan Ave at 16th St to Prairie Ave south to Cermak Rd east to S. Parkway (now Martin Luther King Jr Blvd) south to Garfield Blvd/Morgan Dr east through Washington Park, then Payne Dr south to Midway east to Jackson Park, then south on S. Cornell Dr (using NB alignment below 65th St, then Stony Island Ave south. The old route remained IL 1 (now Michigan Ave/60th St/State St), then Marquette Rd east to South Chicago Ave to Stony Island Ave. In 1936 (IDOT), US 330 was rerouted around the west of Calumet Lake as new construction, then east on 130th St back to Torrence Ave. The old route remained US 12-20 on 95th St and unnumbered Torrence Ave south to 130th. In June 1937, Illinois informed AASHO that they had deposted US 330 north of Geneva, which became IL 31 (still IL 31 today except in St Charles US 330 used 2nd/Main/5th) In November 1937, Illinois requested that all of US 330 be renumbered as US 30 ALT except the southern 3 miles (go back to being IL 52) and its section using 95th St and Torrence Ave down to 130th St (remove from state highway system). Despite having just published the rule that intrastate US routes should be at least 300 miles, AASHO waanted them to instead extend US 330 further west over US 30 to Dixon, where the new US 30 was to run a more direct southern routing. In December 1937 (AASHO), Illinois agreed to extend US 330 west replacing US 30 to Elburn IL.
Also in December 1937, they also rerouted US 330 at Lynwood to stay on IL 42 south to US 30. The old route east to US 30 near the Indiana line became IL 54 (now IL 83).
In May 1938 (AASHO), US 330 was extended west replacing more US 30 to the new US 30 (now US 52) Dixon IL.
US 330 extended to Dixon 1938 Official About 1941, US 330 was extended west replacing more US 30 to just west of Sterling IL, then IL 2 southwest to the new US 30 near Galt.
US 330 extended past Sterling 1941 Official In December 1941, Illinois informed AASHO that US 330 will be changed to US 30 ALT for their 1942 map. Today, it is Lincoln Hwy, then 4th St through Sterling; IL 2 for a bit; Prairieville Rd/Palmyra Rd through Palmyra to Dixon; IL 2, then US 52 to central Dixon; IL 38 out of Dixon to east of Franklin Grove; Track Rd to Willow Rd; abandoned north back to IL 38 for 0.7 miles; Hoosier Rd north to Naylor Rd; abandoned east back to IL 38; IL 38 to short of Woodland Acres; E Thorpe Rd/abandoned across Kyte River/Klondike Rd; IL 38 to Rochelle; Lincoln Ave, then Lincoln Hwy through Rochelle; IL 38 to the Kane County Fairgrounds; abandoned/Prairie St east to 14th St south; IL 38 to US 12-20-45 Hillside (except abandoned north side at Kautz Rd/RR overpass area east of Geneva; Brush Hill Rd between IL 56 and York Rd in Oak Brook); Roosevelt Rd to Michigan Ave Chicago.
US 330 replaced by US 30 ALT 1942 Official US 330 #2: Rejected by AASHO in July 1955. Utah and Wyoming requested a route from US 30-S/191 (now UT 13-102 jct) Tremonton Jct UT to US 30-N (now US 30) Sage WY. Tremonton to Deweyville UT would've been new primary routing; Deweyville to Logan would replace UT 69 (now UT 38); Logan to Garden City would be an overlay with US 89; Garden City to Sage Creek Jct UT would replace UT 3 (now UT 30); Sage Creek Jct to Sage WY would replace UT 51 (now UT 30) and WY 89. AASHO suggested they try improving the request to make this US 30 and eliminated both US 30-N and US 30-S. A decade earlier, UT and WY agreed to request US 30-C for this routing. Utah then suggested US 30 instead, without eliminating US 30-N or US 30-S, but Wyoming refused. There is no AASHO document showing they applied for any of it. | ||||||
