Creation: Appeared in the 1925 US Route plan and was rolled out in late 1926 as the same routing: US 41 (now Broadway at SE 1st Ave) Ocala FL to US 92 Orlando FL. The original length reported to AASHO was just 87 miles.
| Adjustments: About 1929, US 441 was given a direct route between Mt. Dora and Leesburg FL, via Tavares. The old route remained a branch of FL 2. Today this is CR 19A, then FL 19 to Eustis; CR 452, then CR 44 through Lisbon back to the new US 441 (now CR 44 Leg A) east of Leesburg. By the early 1930s, US 441 was rerouted in its approach to Ocala. Originally it used SE Lake Weir Ave/SE 9th Ave/SE 8th St, then north with then-US 41 on Main St (now SE 1st Ave) to Broadway. Now it was using SE 3rd Ave to SE 8th St. About 1934, US 441 was rerouted from Plymouth FL to Orlando. Originally it used Highland Ave/Old Dixie Hwy from Plymouth to Apopka; Orange Ave/Park Ave/6th St/Alabama Ave through Apopka; Apopka Blvd to Lockhart (cutoff by FL 414); Beggs Rd, then Edgewater Dr to Lakeview St to Glendonjo St (this has been destroyed by I-4) to Marks St to US 92 Orange Ave. It is unclear if US 441 continued into Orlando with US 92. US 441 was changed to use Orange Blossom Tr to Orlando (except it used Overland Rd to the Lockhart area), then Kentucky Ave to Church St over to Orange Ave. If US 441 ever used Old Dixie Hwy through Lady Lake FL, it stopped doing so by 1936. Around 1937, US 441 was rerouted in Orlando to use Washington St over to Orange Ave In June 1937, AASHO suggested that US 441 extend over US 41 to High Springs (and relocate US 41 further west). AASHO also floated extending US 441 south with US 92 to Kissimmee, then replace US 192 to US 1 Melbourne. Florida countered with having Ocala to High Springs numbered as US 41E and instead extending US 441 over then-FL 19 to US 41W Williston. Florida agreed with the US 192 replacement. AASHO informed Florida that the split routing wasn't going to be approved, and Florida responded with implementing AASHO's idea to have US 441 replace US 41 to High Springs. This was approved and US 441 replaced US 41 to High Springs, effective January 1, 1938.
About 1941, US 17-92 was rerouted to use Washington St over to Kentucky Ave. US 441 may have been truncated to Kentucky/Washington. About 1944, US 17-92 was moved from Washington St to Robinson St and US 441 may have been truncated the 2 blocks back to Robinson. Between 1937-46, US 441 was rerouted in Leesburg FL to leave Main St via 14th St instead of using 13th St/Sunshine Ave. Also Between 1937-46, US 441 was rerouted in Ocala. It now left SE 3rd Ave on SE 17th St west to Pine Ave north to SW 10th east back to Magnolia Ave north through Ocala. In March 1948 (AASHO), Florida requested that US 441 be extended from High Springs west to US 19 Perry FL. In October 1948 (AASHO), US 441 was extended north with US 41 to Lake City FL; with FL 47/GA 89 to Pearson; with GA 31 to Dublin; with GA 29 to Milledgeville; with GA 24 to Commerce; with GA 15 to end at US 23-123 Cornelius GA. AASHO had wanted Georgia to have US 441 follow GA 57 from Irwington to end at US 41 in Macon, but Georgia pushed back on that. In Florida's June 1948 application, they indicated they agreed to extend US 441 to Cornelia GA only if US 27's extension from Tallahassee to Miami was also approved. If it were not approved, Florida wanted the US 441 extension to Perry FL.
Between 1937-49, US 441 was removed from NW 158 Ln, NW 162 Ln, NW 164 Ln, and Old State Route 3 west of Alachua FL. In September 1950 (AASHO), US 441 was extended south by following US 92 to Kissimmee; follow US 192 to St Cloud; follow FL 15 to Belle Glade; follow FL 80 to past Loxahatchee; follow FL 7 to end at US 41 Miami. Florida's February 1950 application was for US 441 to stay on FL 80 to end at US 1 West Palm Beach, but AASHO convinced Florida to re-apply to Miami in order to connect back with US 41.
About 1951, US 441 was removed from Magnolia Ave through Ocala; SW 10th St; SW 17th St/SE 3rd Ave (no longer connects with)/SE 1st Ave south of Ocala. US 441 was now using Pine Ave all the way through Ocala. US 441 may have briefly used 1st/Railroad/Main through McIntyre GA but stopped doing so by 1951. US 441 may have briefly used Old Athens Ln south of Nicholson GA, plus Broad St and Memorial Dr in Nicholson. In October 1951 (AASHO), US 441 was extended north to Lake City TN (now Rocky Top TN) by following US 23 to Dillsboro NC; followed US 19 ALT to Whittier NC; replaced NC 107 to Tennessee; followed TN 71 through Knoxville to Lake City.
In 1951 or 1952, US 441 was removed from NW 186th Ave and NW 244th St through High Springs FL. Between 1950-52, US 441 was rerouted in Douglas GA to use Peterson all the way through. Before, it used Peterson/Sellers/Madison. In Dec 1952, AASHO fielded and discouraged a request directly from the US 441 Highway Association to extend US 441 north with US 25W as part of an overall extension to Louisville KY. In 1953, AASHO rejected Tennessee's request to renumber US 441 from Gatlinburg to Knoxville via Sevierville as US 441-N. In 1956, AASHO rejected Tennessee's request to extend US 441 north with US 25W to La Follette, then northeast with TN 63 to US 25E, then north with US 25E to end at US 58 Cumberland Gap VA. Between 1954-57, US 441 was put on its current routing between Dillard GA and Franklin NC, leaving behind Old State Line Rd/abandoned, plus Wallallau Gap Rd, Tryphosa Rd, Old Georgia Rd, Addington Bridge Rd, Terrell Rd, and Belden Cir. Also between 1954-57, US 441 was removed from SR 1331 Brendle Rd in Macon County NC. Also between 1954-57, US 441 was placed on new alignment from Greens Creek to Dillsboro NC, leaving behind an extended NC 116 and SR 1360 Mockingbird Ln (nee Old Franklin Rd). About 1957, US 441 was removed from Overland Rd between Lockhart and Apopka FL. Between 1956-58, US 441 was given one way splits in Commerce GA. SB used the original route Elm St while NB used Broad St starting from GA 98. A railroad runs in the median. About 1958, US 441 was removed from Dixie Ave through Fruitland Park FL. Also in 1958, US 441 was reconstructed to be on both sides of the Pigeon River from the southern end of Pigeon Forge south to the north end of the Gatlinburg Bypass. The original route used today's SB roadway to Beech Branch then crossed the river and used today's NB roadway the rest of the way south. About 1959, US 441 was removed from CR 44 and CR 44 Leg A east of Leesburg FL. In 1960, AASHO rejected a 2nd request to extend US 441 north to Cumberland Gap VA. About 1960, US 441 was rerouted onto its curvy passage through the I-95/FL 112 interchange in Miami; also US 441 was rerouted at the I-95/FL Turnpike/FL 826 interchange complex by going directly to the ramp along NE 165th St, then cut northwest across I-95 (which olny existed north of the complex) to get back to 7th Ave NW. Also about 1960, US 441 was removed from Veterans Way south of Micanopy FL and Tuscawilla Rd/NE 1st St through Micanopy. Between 1958-61, US 441 was removed from Sprite Loop well north of High Springs FL. In May 1961, Florida requested US 27-441 be moved to the new highway on the west of Lake Weir between Lady Lake and Belleview FL, with the old route via Ocklawaha becoming US 27 ALT-441 ALT. AASHO approved moving US 27, but leaving US 441 on the old route. Florida protested this old decision and in August 1961 they reconsidered and approved US 441 moving, leaving behind US 441 ALT (now CR 25 except west of FL 35 it is FL 25) plus Teague Tr above Lady Lake.. In December 1962 (AASHO), US 441 was removed from central Athens GA. The new route followed more Milledgeville Ave north to Prince Ave west to the Athens Loop, then east back to US 441. This new routing was designated US 441 Temp. The old route through downtown Athens became GA 15 ALT. Today this is Lumpkin St, Broad St, Thomas St, North Ave, and Dr Martin Luther King Jr Pkwy. In June 1964 (AASHO), US 441 was given its bypass around the north of Tavares and Mt. Dora. AASHO turned down Florida's request to make the old route US 441 ALT. Now it is CR OLD 441 in Lake County and CR 500A in Orange County.
About 1964, I-95 south of the FL Tpk/US 441 complex was built. US 441 was placed on its general path through the complex. The previous NB path uses some of I-95 NB Exit 12B's ramp, plus FL 826's alignment between I-95 and the Turnpike. US 441's SB path was removed entirely. Also about 1964, US 441 was given its bypass around the north of Leesburg FL. The old route is Main St and US 27 14th St. Also about 1964, US 441 was removed from Terrora Cir plus the lengthy Old US 441 and Main St from Tallulah Park GA through Clayton GA In October 1965 (AASHO), US 441 was placed on new alignment from Ocala to Reddick FL. AASHO turned down Florida's request to make the old route via Kendrick, Martin, and Lowell become US 441 ALT. It is now CR 25A. Between 1963-68, US 441 was removed from SR 1488 (now this is US 441 NB) and SR 1489 Sunset Farms Rd at Wilmont NC. In Dec 1970 (AASHO), US 441 was removed from within the GSMNP boundaries between Cherokee NC and Gatlinburg TN so that the Park Service could exclude through truck traffic. Between 1965-71, US 441 was removed from George Eller Cir at Mountain City GA Between 1968-71, US 441 was removed from CR 235 north of Apalachee GA. In 1971, US 441 was removed from Old Broadway at the I-640 and TN 33 interchanges area. In January 1972 (AASHO), US 441 was given its western bypass of Cornelia GA, leaving behind US 441 Business. In March 1973 (NCDOT), US 441 was placed on a new bypass east of Franklin NC, leaving behind US 441 Business.
In September 1974 (NCDOT), US 441 was removed from Haywood Rd leading north and west from Dillsboro NC. In March 1978 (GDOT), US 441 was given one-way splits through Douglas GA. SB uses the original routing on Peterson Ave, while NB uses Madison Ave. In August 1979, Tennessee presented AASHTO a proposal, as part of eliminating US 25W, that would have rerouted US 441 at Knoxville to replace US 25W to its I-75 interchange at Rocky Top. Knoxville to Halls Crossroads would have become part of an extended US 129 and the Norris Freeway would've been a state route.
![]() US 441 proposed reroute north out of Knoxville 1979 TDOT Correspondence to AASHO In October 1979 (AASHTO), US 441 was placed on the new Athens Loop freeway around the east of the city. This left behind GA 15 on Milledgeville Ave. The US 441 Temp around since 1962 was deposted at this time.
In January 1980 (GDOT), US 441 was removed from Wilbanks Rd and Furniture Cir north of Cornelia. About 1980, US 441 was removed from Shoal Creek Church Loop in Qualla and Old US 441 loop south of Cherokee NC. About 1983, US 441 was removed from Old Conners Hwy/removed bridge over FL 76/St Lucie Canal. In May 1985 (GDOT), US 441 was rerouted in Dublin to use Martin Luther King Jr Blvd to Jefferson St. Previously it Monroe St to Jackson St to Jefferson St. About 1987, US 441 was removed from CR 880 from Belle Glade FL to Twentymile Bend and from FL 15-80 from Belle Glade noth to the new US 441 alignment. In July 1989 (AASHTO), US 441 was given its western bypass of Milledgeville GA. The old route through town became US 441 Business. In December 1990 (AASHTO), US 441 was given its eastern bypass of Commerce GA. The old route through town became US 441 Business. Also in December 1990 (AASHTO), US 441 was given its eastern bypass of Demorest and Clarkesville, leaving behind an extended US 441 Business from Cornelia.
In October 1991 (AASHTO), US 441 was given its western bypass of Eatonton GA, leaving behind US 441 Business.
About 1993, US 441 was removed from the lengthy Old Historic US 441 from Hollywood GA to north of Turnersville; also from GA 15 Loop at Tallulah Falls, plus nearby Moss St. In October 1995 (AASHTO), US 441 was given its western bypass of Watkinsville, leaving behind US 441 Business.
In April 1998 (AASHTO), US 441 was placed on new alignment from Baldwin GA south past Hollingsworth to almost Homer. The old route became a lengthy Old Hwy 441. Also in April 1998 (AASHTO), US 441 was given its eastern bypass of Homer GA. The old route south of Homer became GA 164. North of Homer became GA 51, then Historic Homer Hwy.
Also in April 1998 (AASHTO), US 441 was given its western bypass of Irwinton GA. The old route became Bacon St/Main St/Gordon McIntyre Rd. About 2005, US 441 was removed from a portion of Stuckey Rd well south of Irwinton GA. Also about 2005, US 441 was removed from Macon Hwy south of Athens GA and placed on new routing to the Athens Loop at Exit 4. In May 2006 (AASHTO), US 441 was removed from Commerce Rd/Old US 441 south of Nicholson GA. About 2007, US 441 was removed from Old US Hwy 441 through Center GA. About 2008, US 441 was removed from Alligator Lake Shore E/removed bridge/Alligator Lake Shore W near St Cloud FL. About 2012, US 441 was removed from Old Milledgeville Rd through Meda GA. In 2020 or 2021, US 441 was rerouted in Lake City FL to follow US 90 west to US 41 north to Bascom Norris Dr, which had been the US 441 Truck route to bypass Marion Ave north of US 90. Comments: The deposting of US 441 through Great Smoky Mountains National Park was met with immediate controversy and regret by both TN and NC. There is nearly a decade of correspondence trying to undo this change. In the end, AASHTO felt it could not impose the posting of a US Route on a road that is owned by the National Park Service. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
