VA 421  not currently assigned
Previous VA 421's: VA 421 #1: Appeared in 1929 as a renumbering of VA 3111. Was a short stub off VA 50 (curr VA 54) to Hanover. This piece was 1/2 mile at most. In 1930-31, VA 421 got a second piece: US 1 Richmond north east 7 miles into Hanover County. Both pieces were renumbered as part of VA 50 in 1932 or 1933 (see VA 421 #2). Today it is US 301-VA 2 and possibly VA 54Y.
VA 421 #2?: Appears on 1933 Conoco map as a renumbering of a piece of VA 50. Ran from US 1-VA 39 (curr US 1-VA 54) Ashland to VA 50 (curr US 301-VA 2) Hanover. In July 1933 VA 421 became part of VA 54. I have no separate confirmation of this route...

VA 441 did exist in the 1928-33 system. However, research has not uncovered which of the new District 4 routes created June 1932 was assigned this number.

VA 442  not currently assigned
Created in June 1932 (CTB Minutes) as an unidentified new primary route. The 1932 VDOT County Atlas shows VA 442 running from US 58/VA 12 Broadnax south to the current SR 658-659 jct. This was renumbered as VA 139 in July 1933. Today it is SR 658.

VA 443-446  not currently assigned
Routes VA 441 and VA 443 up to as high as VA 446 did exist in the 1928-33 system. However, research has not uncovered which of the new District 4 routes created June 1932 was assigned these numbers. The choices are:
Today's VA 157
Today's VA 6 east of Three Chopt Road
Today's VA 156 east of Disputanta
The spur to Nottoway CH that became VA 143 in July 1933
The spur from VA 5 to the James River Ferry that became VA 36 in July 1933
It is possible that a couple of these were covered by existing numbers in the 1928-33 system without new numbers added. The 1932 VDOT County Atlas I saw did not have Henrico or Nottoway County in them.

Comment:  With the coming of 457, I thought Virginia might be increasing its signing of more routes when a state route got rerouted, but this has not been the case.

VA 460  not currently assigned
Previous VA 460's: VA 460Y: Was the south leg of the triangle formed at the US 301-460 split south of Petersburg. Explicitly shown on Petersburg insets 1955-58. In 1959, it appears to have been absorbed by the new US 460 interchange with I-95. One idea of conjecture is that VA 460Y was once either VA 299 or VA 299Y, but when US 301 was rerouted this way in 1953, that probably began VA 460Y's existence.
