Creation: Created in June 1951 (AASHO) as a new US Route corridor from US 79 Paris TN to US 41-460 Evansville IN. It appears this was originally envisioned to extend southwest to Memphis with US 79. Both Kentucky and Indiana's application in 1950 had Evansville to Memphis, while Tennessee had it ending at Paris. AASHO would not consider the application until all 3 states agreed on the corridor. US 641 was added to TN 54 and replaced several Kentucky state routes: KY 95 from TN to US 68, KY 453 to Kentucky Dam, KY 489 to Kuttawa, KY 93 to Fredonia, KY 91 to Marion; added to US 60 to Henderson, added to US 41 to Evansville. The original length reported to AASHO was 244 miles.

Adjustments: Between 1955-59, US 641 was removed from KY 2094 through Waverly KY. About 1960, US 641 was given one-way splits through Benton KY. SB used the original route Main St; NB uses Poplar St/5thSt In 1963 or 1964, US 641 was rerouted to avoid Kuttawa. The old route remained US 62 into Kuttawa (now Old Kuttawa Rd; KY 295 Lake Barkley Dr); KY 295 leaving Kuttawa; abandoned routing through the Lyon County Boat Ramp and underwater; Oak Ridge Rd
In 1967, US 641 was rerouted in Murray KY to use 12th St straight through. North of KY 1327 was new construction. The old route cut east on Sycamore (became US 641 Bus which has moved), then north on 4th (still US 641 Bus, plus KY 2075) through downtown. Between 1961-68, US 641 was removed from a zig-zag in Hazel KY at the RR crossing. It used to run Old Main/Calloway/N Main. In December 1968 (AASHO), US 641 was removed from Indiana. They felt US 641 served no purpose for them and had not marked it for several years. They also stopped showing it on state maps in 1961. There was no application from Kentucky to truncate it further. The weird part is that Indiana's application explicitly had US 641's north end at US 460 EAST (Fares at Morgan) 4.9 miles from Kentucky, while the 1951 application to add US 641 had its north end at US 460 WEST (Fares at Virginia) 4.089 miles from Kentucky. Regardless, the old route to Evansville remained US 41 (today this is just S Kentucky Ave/Canal St/Fares Ave north of I-69).
Between 1960-70, US 641 was moved from Adams St to Main St north out of Sturgis KY In November 1970 (AASHO), US 641 north was truncated to where it met US 60 in Marion KY, leaving behind US 60 to US 41 Henderson. The application was vewry explicit the truncation was from US 41 and not the Indiana State Line, suggesting the 1968 action by Indiana truncated US 641 to US 41 Henderson. In 1976, US 641 was rerouted at Paris to head south with TN 69 Veterans Blvd and follow TN 69 to end at I-40 well south of Camden. Tennessee first petitioned this extension in 1975 but was deferred. Wood Av remained part of TN 69 (TN 356 today). In 1977, US 641 was removed from KY 1824 through Almo Heights, Dexter, and Hardin
About 1986, US 641 was rebuilt between Benton and Draffenville. Surviving old segments are Riverside Dr near the Clark River; Tri-state Ln In 2009, US 641 was removed from Kentucky Dam, a removed bridge, a bit of Taylor Park Rd, and abandoned alignment. In 2015, US 641 was extended south over more TN 69 through Parsons and Decaturville to the Bath Springs area, then followed TN 114 southeast to US 64 Clifton Junction.
In 2018, US 641 was rebuilt between Fredonia and south of Marion. The old route is KY 91.
In fall 2023, US 641 was placed on new construction from Hazel KY to just below Murray. The old route became KY 2547. Comments: US 641 no longer touches its parent and its utility as a US route corridor is a bit questionable. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
