US 541: Created in June 1931 (AASHO) as a newly designated route, as an addition to FL 23 from US 41 (now 10th St) Palmetto to US 41 in Tampa. The basis for the new US route was that it carried twice the traffic as US 41.
Maps are quite vague about where US 541 ended in Tampa but the photo above points toward Florida and Lafayette, where US 92 also ended, but about 1934 according to multiple maps, US 541 was extended to US 41 further north in the Chapman area. No map I can find before this showed US 541 crossing McKay Bay. With the extension, US 541 was routed across McKay Bay and up 22nd St to 4th Ave. US 541 then used 4th Ave to 13th (now Channelside Dr) south to Lafayette (now Kennedy Blvd) west to Florida Ave north out of Tampa to where it met US 41 Nebraska Ave in the Chapman area. The original US 541 on 50th St north of the causeway over McKay Bay plus 7th St west looks to have become US 541 ALT. Note that this wasn't approved by AASHO until May 1938. In 1943 (bridge date), US 541 was removed from the inaccurately named Old US 41A north of Gibsonton. In October 1951 (AASHO), Florida sent a request to extend US 301 south from Tampa over US 541. AASHO approved this request in November 1951. However, Rand McNally contacted AASHO in December 1951 to question why US 301 replaced US 541 when the state of Florida told them that US 41 ALT would replace US 541 through Tampa and across McKay Bay while US 41 would come down 50th St and replace US 541 to Palmetto. After AASHO contacted Florida, theny replied in late January 1952 that AASHO was supposed to have approved a verbal change to its Oct 1951 request. AASHO then told them that Florida would need to re-submit to get what they actually signed. In April 1952 (AASHO), Florida sent a request to have US 541 from Chapman through Tampa and across McKay Bay be renumbered as US 41 Business (which remains today) while the rest of US 541 down to Palmetto would become part of US 41 (remains today except: US 541 used US 41 Bus/17th St/Bayshore Rd/US 41 Bus in Palmetto; Bayshore Rd through Palm View and Rubonia; Old US Hwy 41 through Sun City; Tamiami Tr north of the Alafia River crossing). AASHO approved these changes in July 1952.
