| Previous US 650's: Final ROUTE LOG US 50: 0 - 0 US 40S: 23 - 23 |
US 650: An original US Highway that in December 1926 ran from US 50 just below Salida CO to US 40S (now an abandoned alignment of US 24-285 that crossed the river at Del Sol Ln in Johnson Village) just east of Buena Vista CO. This was not in the 1925 plan or either 1926 revision list. US 650 was an addition to CO 15. The distance was reported to AASHO as 27 miles (see paragrapgh below scans).
In 1932 (CDOT), US 650 was rerouted near its northern end to stay west of the Arkansas River and the RR north of Nathrop. The original route is CR 301. It was also been removed from Nathrop, though the old routing through town is completely abandoned. The reroutes and straightenings reduced US 650 to 23 miles. In November 1934 (AASHO), US 650 became part of US 285, which has undergone further upgrades and re-routes. Per this article, signs weren't actually swapped until July 1936. Today US 650's route: CO 291 out of Salida, except US 650 used CR 153; the part of CR 195 that parallels CO 291 (including abandoned bridge over the Arkansas River) then across 291 to more mostly abandoned routing which becomes CR 193; US 285 except CR 260, an abandoned 3/4 mile loop that includes a bit of CR 195 at Centerville, CR 286 below Nathrop.
Note that the 27 miles reported to AASHO in 1927 has to be in error. The original road between Salida and Buena Vista ran completely west of the Arkansas River until Nathrop. Per page 24, this early Clasons Map showed the distance as 26 miles. The initial state highway was built between Salida and Nathrop in 1925 to cross the Arkansas River two more times and the new distance of the alignment from Salida to the original US 40S Buena Vista is 24 miles. I believe CDOT did not update their mileage information before sending to AASHO. Thanks to the Salida Museum Association for their assistance with some information related to US 650. | |||||
