Creation: Appeared in August 1934 (AASHO) as the 3rd US 411, running from US 11-241 (now 3rd at Broad) Gadsden AL to Tennessee. At that time AASHO sent Tennessee changes that said US 411 would absorb US 11-E and end at US 19 (now ) Johnson City TN. AASHO did not address US 11-E from Knoxville to Greeneville, nor explicitly say Johnson City to Bristol would just be US 19 instead of US 11E-19. So Tennessee though US 411 should end at US 11-E Greeneville.
After some back and forth, Tennessee said that US 411 should end in Bristol. AASHO agreed to this.
In January 1935, Tennessee wrote AASHO, affirming that US 411 went to Bristol and that US 11-E was removed everywhere. Tennessee now requested that the entirety of old US 11-E become US 11 ALT. AASHO denied this request and Tennessee apparently left US 11-E as it was and US 411 in Tennessee's eyes apparently ended at US 129 (now TN 33-35 jct) Maryville.
At least 1 commercial map drawer, General Draft, showed US 411 to Bristol and US 11-E gone. Virginia state officials showed this on its 1936-40 issues, though notably General Draft drew those maps as well.

However, no official Tennessee map nor Rand McNally or Gousha commercial maps showed US 411 within the Volunteer State, making the effective end being the Georgia/Tennessee line.
US 411 was added to AL 23 to the Georgia line to pick up GA 20 to Rome. However, Georgia maps show US 411 coming in on GA 53 to reach Rome (which connected to AL 62 which met AL 23 in Centre AL. Some commercial maps showed both alignments as US 411 and I can find no documents that address this situation, including the change on Alabama's side to the southern route about 1946.

US 411 replaced US 41-W out of Rome, then US 41 south to Cartersville, then GA 61 to the Tennessee line.

Adjustments: If US 411 ever used Cemetery Rd and Bagwell Rd outside Cave Spring GA it stopped doing so by 1940.
In 1940, Tennessee finally recognized US 411 on maps as an addition to TN 33 to Maryville. Maps are vague but it likely ended at US 129 leaving town (current TN 33-35 jct).
Between 1940-43, US 411 was removed from Old Englewood-Etowah Rd south of Englewood TN.
About 1946, US 411 was rerouted at Centre AL to instead follow AL 62 (now AL 25) to Georgia, leaving behind AL AL 23 (now AL 9, except inside the Centre bypass is AL 283; just outside the bypass is AL 68; Weiss Lake part is underwater; Old Hwy 9 through Cedar Bluff) to Georgia via Cedar Bluff AL.
Also about 1946, US 411 was extended north with TN 35 to US 11E (now US 11E Bus) Greeneville.

Also about 1946, US 411 was removed from Mull Rd and Barton Station Rd west of Benton TN.
In November 1952, noting that signage was already on the ground unbeknowned to the state highway department, US 411 was extended officially north to Bristol through AASHO.
Also in 1952, US 411 was put on one-way splits in Bristol using 4th St NB (now Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Dr) and 5th St SB.
In 1953, US 411 was extended south from Gadsden AL, replacing US 11 to the relocated US 11 in Springerville AL.
About 1955, US 411 was placed on its bypass of Cartersville GA, leaving behind GA 3 (now GA 293) into Cartersville and GA 61 out of Cartersville.
In 1957, US 411 south was trucated to US 231 Ashville AL, leaving behind a county road that became AL 23 a couple years later.
In November 1958 (AASHO), US 411 was extended south with US 231 a few miles, then was added to AL 25 to end at US 78 Leeds AL.

In 1959, US 411 was put on the Jonesborough TN bypass, leaving behind TN 34 Spur, a little TN 81 and Boone St
About 1960, US 411 was removed from Cedar Grove Rd and Old Ashville Rd at its I-20 interchange near Leeds AL.
In October 1961 (AASHO), US 411 was rerouted in Rome GA to follow GA 101 (now GA 53) southeast, then added to GA 344 (now GA 20) east out of Rome to the Cartersville GA area. The old route via Kingston remained GA 20 (now GA 293 except in Rome it used GA 53, Calhoun Ave, and Kingston Ave; on the Cartersville end it used Bearden Rd NW)

About 1962, US 411 was removed from Lokey St/La Rue Finis/removed bridge at Leesburg AL
In 1963, US 411 was placed on its current route through Sevierville TN and east to nearly Birds Crossroad. The old routing used Parkway, Park Rd, Eastgate Rd (no longer connects to)/Old Newport Hwy (no longer connects to)/TN 416, another long Old Newport Hwy (partly uses today's TN 339)
About 1965, US 411 was extended through Greeneville replacing TN 93 out to the new US 11E bypass.
In 1967, US 411 was removed from Old Newport Hwy through Caney Branch TN and (no longer connects to) Fallen Bridge Rd at the Nolichucky River crossing.
Also in 1967, US 411 north was truncated to the US 19E-19W split (now TN 44 at Elizabethton Hwy) in Hillcrest. The route to Bristol remains US 11E-19. It is unclear if US 411 underwent this change in Bristol prior to truncation: moved to the Bristol Bypass and a one-way pair using State St WB and Shelby St/4th St EB, replacing TN 34 Byp. The old route used Bluff City Hwy, Edgemont Ave, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Dr, Alabama Ave (no longer connects to), one way pair of 4th (now part of MLK Jr Dr)/5th Ave

Also in 1971 or 1972, US 411 was removed from Gadsden Hwy/Old Hwy 411 through McGhee AL.
In 1975, US 411 was placed on the new Madisonville TN bypass. The old route used Englewood Rd/College St/Warren Rd
Also in 1975, US 411 was removed from a bit of Rock Hill Rd, removed bridge over French Broad River and Old Greeneville Hwy east of Newport TN.
In July 1976 (AASHTO), US 411 north was truncated to Greeneville, leaving behind US 11E. It is still US 11E except: old TN 44 and TN 44 to Hillcrest and Bluff City; TN 390 and abandoned routing around the TN 394 interchange north of Bluff City; TN 91 into central Johnson City and Roan St north out of downtown.
In February 1978 (GDOT), US 411 was removed from the lengthy Old Hwy 411 between Oakman and south of Chatsworth GA.
In 1980, US 411 was removed from Chuckey Hwy in far eastern Greene County TN.

In June 1990 (AASHTO), US 411 was given its northern bypass of Centre AL. The old route became US 411 Business.
In 2007, US 411 was removed from removed bridge/Riddles Bend Rd at the Coosa River well south of Rainbow City AL.
About 2012, US 411 was removed from Old Hwy 411 south of Benton TN.
About 2015, US 411 was removed from the lenghty Ewing Ave/Old US 411 from northern Gadsden to Turkeytown AL.
In 2015 or 2016, US 411 was removed from a lengthy Old Hwy 411 from US 25W-70 westward. This shifted the north end of US 411 slightly westward on US 25W-70.
About 2021, US 411 was removed from Old US 411 east out of Chestnut Hill TN and rerouted onto TN 92 to get back to US 411 at Chestnut Hill.
In September 2023 (per April 2023 application to AASHTO), US 411 was removed from the lenghty Old US 411 between Turkeytown and south of Leesburg AL.
Comments: US 411 is not much of an independent corridor, paralleling other US routes closely nearly everywhere.

US 411 #1: Appeared in the 1925 US Route plan, running from US 25 Corbin KY to US 11 Bristol VA.
When the system debuted in late 1926, US 411 was changed to begin at US 25-E (now 0.2 miles west of the parking lot for the Cumberland Gap area) Cumberland Gap VA. North from there to Corbin became US 25-E instead.

In 1930 (bridge dates), US 411 was rebuilt between Weber City and Bristol to use today's US 58-421 leaving behind a few loops described above plus plenty of abandoned alignments/driveways.
In Feb 1930 (CTB), US 11-19 was rerouted in Bristol to use Piedmont St instead of Front St, so US 411's east end may have shifted to State St at Piedmont.

In June 1932 (AASHO), US 411 was renumbered as part of US 421 and became US 58 in May 1933, except Pattonsville to Clinchport became part of VA 70. I have no VDOT maps that show this - April 1932 Official and June 1932 Lee County show US 411 and July 1933 Official shows US 58. However, winter 1932 Rand McN, and the 1933 maps of Rand McN, Gousha and Gen Draft all show US 421.
Note that per a 9/15/32 letter from Virginia to AASHO saying May 1932 changes will not be signed in the field until the base map can be revised (which turned out to be July 1933), US 411 signs were likely directly replaced in the field by US 58 signs. This also means that this US 411 was signed nearly the entire time US 411 #2 below existed.
US 411's surviving path today is US 58 to Jonesville VA except: National Park Rd; SR 912 loop; SR 732 through the old Gibson Station area; piece of SR 692 that is north of US 58; SR 729 east of Wheeler; SR 684 routing south of US 58; US 58 Business through Ewing; SR 697 and SR 672 to go to Rose Hill; SR 670; SR 813 loop to Henegartown; small bit of SR 621 and all of SR 814 in the Russels Store area; SR 946 (except used the SR 815 loop); SR 899 and SR 880 down to Cony Hollow; SR 836 and SR 745 loops.
US 411's surviving path is US 58 ALT to Pennington Gap VA except: SR 715, 716, and 760; SR 645 and SR 644 in Ben Hur; Combs Rd to Pennington Gap.
US 411's surviving path is US 421 to Bristol VA except: bit of SR 630; SR 785 through Woodway; SR 915 up Wallen Ridge; SR 702 to Stickleyville; SR 638 through Pattonsville; SR 600 east to Clinchport, using SR 882, abandoned routing, SR 883 and VA 65 west; SR 870, then US 23-58-421 Bus through Gate City; SR 619/VDOT yard; SR 701 and SR 614 over to Hiltons, then SR 709, 689 and 692

US 411 #2: In May 1932 (AASHO), North Carolina requested a new US route from US 311 near Randleman NC via Greensboro to US 311 Madison NC.
In June 1932, AASHO wanted North Carolina to move US 311 to this more direct corridor and assign US 411 to what was US 311 running via Winston-Salem and High Point. North Carolina highway officials actually agreed with this, but could not endorse it because Winston-Salem would put up a fuss and since the highway officials were both from Greensboro this would create even more pushback. In their response they also expanded the US 411 request to extend with US 311 to Candor, then on to the US 1 and US 74 (now Washington St) intersection in Rockingham.
AASHO then agreed to US 411 on the more direct route, as an addition to NC 704 from Madison to Greensboro; NC 70 to Randleman; US 311 to Candor; NC 170 to Norman; US 15 to Rockingham
In 1933, US 411 was rerouted in Greensboro to follow Elm north to Asheboro St (then US 421), northwest to Edwards Pl west to Greene St north to Price St northeast to N. Elm St north to Wendover Ave west to Winstead Pl west to Northwood St west to Battleground Ave (current US 220).

In September 1934 (AASHO), US 411 was renumbered as US 220. Today it is Washington St, then Lee St out of Rockingham; Ellerbe Rd, US 220, Billy Covington Rd, US 220 (including I-73/74 ROW) through Ellerbe and Norman to Emery; US 220 ALT to Candor; SR 1579 leaving Candor, then US 220 ALT to Ulah (except McBride Lumber Rd; Cagle Rd which is now cutoff by I-73/74; Odom Dr; Plantation Circle; Asbury Church Rd; Gap Rd/Old US 220, then NC 705 to Seagrove); US 220 Business through Asheboro to Level Cross (except Cedar Grove Rd and possibly an "Old State Hwy" loop); Randleman Rd north to the outskirts of Greensboro; O'Connor St, Elm St, Removed Edwards Pl, McGee St, Greene St, removed Price St, Elm St, Wendover Ave; US 220 to Madison (except Old Battleground Rd; Summerfield Rd through Summerfield; Spotswood Rd in the US 158 vicinity; Farrar Store Rd, then NC 65 west, Sylvania Rd/Lemons Loop and NC 68; SR 1121, 2325, and 1124 loops; Williams Rd, Ellisboro Rd, Tourist Rd, abandoned; US 220 Business into Madison.
