Creation: US 412 was conceived by a group of Chambers of Commerce from Missouri, Arkansas and Tennessee in the late 1970s. AASHTO turned down a request to add US 412 to the US Highway System in June 1980, but not long after (no documentation yet found about this) in November 1980, US 412 was approved, running from US 67 (now US 67 Bus) Walnut Ridge AR to I-40 Jackson TN. US 412 replaced AR/MO 25 from Walnut Ridge to Kennett MO; replaced MO 84 to Hayti; added to I-55 then I-155 to Dyersburg TN, then followed US 51 to Fowlkes, then TN 20 to Jackson.

Adjustments: By 1986, US 412 was rerouted to follow US 51 north and east around Dyersburg TN to a new expressway south and southeast back to where TN 20 (now TN 210) ran.
In Nov 1986 (AASHO), US 412 was added to I-40 around Jackson TN, then after a brief wrong-way duplex with US 70, follow TN 20 to Hohenwald and TN 99 from Hohenwald through Columbia to I-65. Note that TDOT maps did not show US 412 on I-40 around Jackson but instead followed TN 20.

In December 1987, AASHO turned down a request to remove US 412 from I-40 and have it follow TN 20 on its new routing via North Parkway that avoids central Jackson. TDOT maps showed US 412 doing this from at least 1988-2003. The 2005 Madison County map also showed this. AASHO suggested they make North Parkway US 412 Business.
In June 1988 (AASHTO), US 412 west was extended to US 183-270 Woodward OK. US 412 followed US 63 to Hardy AR; followed US 62 to Alpena; replaced AR 68/OK 33 to eastern Tulsa OK; followed I-44 then I-244 to central Tulsa; followed US 64 west out of Tulsa; followed the Cimarron Tpk to I-35; followed US 64 to Enid; replaced OK 15 to Woodward. Around this time, the highway was removed from S4200 and E590 through Inola OK to the Mayes County line. Also around this time, US 62 was removed from US 62 Bus through Cotter AR.

Comments: US 412 is a decent corridor from I-35 to I-40.
US 412 from I-35 to at least Tulsa is scheduled to be a western I-42 at some point, with extension to I-49 in Arkansas under consideration.
The choice of the number 412 is a mystery and should've been something like US 170 or US 370. Now that it has been expanded the way it has, it would make a good candidate to be an extended US 58 (which would also eliminate US 70-S).
