US 611: Created without assigned number in July 1926 in the period between the original 1925 preliminary list and the final list in November 1926. The number first appears on the November 1926 US route list AASHO sent to Pennsylvania. US 611 ran from Philadelphia to Scranton
US 611 was an addition to PA 2. There are some 1927 documents regarding Pennsylvania's unhappiness with the routes and numbers assigned. In March 1927 AASHO and Pennsylvania reworked an AASHO map of the November 1926 designations. They agreed on renumbering US 611 as US 311. However, someone found out US 311 had already been assigned in NC/VA and it went back to being US 611.
When the first formal list of US routes came out in 1927, US 611 was inadvertently left off. The actual endpoints of US 611's initial routing are difficult to pin down because: 1. The near-universal practice of maps showing route markers only at the edges of insets up into the 1930s. 2. Philadelphia did not mark its US Routes until 1931 3. Philadelphia maintained all its street network until 1937, so maps didn't show the routes within the city. The earliest map I found with labels and definite routings in the city was a 1936 Esso map of New Jersey. It shows the south end of US 611 at the intersection of Broad and Roosevelt Blvd. US 1-13 is shown as continuing south on Broad. 4. The multiple variations of Scranton routings in the early days on maps.
In June 1931 (AASHO), US 611 was rerouted to avoid East Stroudsburg between Stroudsburg and Delaware Water Gap. This was a route swap with part of PA 612. Today the former routing is US 209 Business into E Stroudsburg; Ridgeway St/Prospect St/Brown St out of E Stroudsburg; abandoned routing through the I-80/US 209 NB interchange and across Brodhead Creek; a little Papermill Rd; abandoned routing through I-80 Exit 310 and the Foxtown Hill/Broad interchange; the last bit of Broad St down to PA 611. In 1933, US 611 was routed away from Bangor with a more direct route from Martins Creek ti Mt Bethel. This was mostly upgrade to primary route plus replaced the PA 827 stub. The old route became PA 712 (now SR 1015 Main St/Lower S Main St from Martins Creek to Bangor and PA 512 to Mt Bethel).
If US 611 ever used Old Easton Rd/Edison Rd south of Doylestown it stopped doing so by the late 1930s. In 1937 (bridge date), US 611 was removed from Delaware Ave/Slateford Rd in Portland. In 1938 (bridge date), US 611 was removed from the lengthy Old Easton Rd north of Doylestown. Between 1938-40, US 611 was removed from Old Easton Rd below Kintnersville; also removed from Old Drinker Tpke near Dunmore. Because a 1938 Esso map explicitly shows only US 11 on Green Ridge St and they explicitly show overlays on other insets, I *think* US 611 was extended in 1939 or 1940 along Green Ridge St/Main St/Market St to US 6 (now US 6 Bus) near Dickson City.
Between 1938-41, US 611 was removed from Wigwam Park Rd, Frantz Rd, and Bartonsville Rd in Bartonsville. In 1941 (bridge date), US 611 was removed from Church Rd/Old York Rd Spur in Elkins Park In 1942 (bridge date), US 611 was removed from Pigeon Way/Learn Rd through Tannersville. In 1948 (bridge date), US 611 was removed from Scotrun Rd and Lower Scrotun Rd in Scrotun. Also about 1948, US 611 was removed from Stricklands Rd and Trinity Hill Rd in Wiscasset; Belmont Ave in Mt. Pocono; Tegawitha Rd/Hemlock Dr and Main St through Tobyhanna; what is now the Old Route 611 Multi-use Trail from Tobyhanna to about Exit 13 on I-380 (note 380 NB was built on US 611's alignment from Exit 8-13); Main St and most of Old State Rd above Elmhurst In 1950, US 611 was removed from Old Easton Rd/PA 413 through Pipersville; Old Easton Rd at Tohickon Creek; Durham Rd throgh Ottsville It appears US 611 was extended south from Roosevelt Blvd to City Hall by 1950. All but a few blocks south of US 30 were a replacement for US 1-13. US 611 was definitely posted south of US 30.
In December 1952 (AASHO), US 611 was rerouted at Portland to a new toll bridge crossing into New Jersey, then followed a bit of NJ 8 before continuing as new construction to a new toll bridge back across to Pennsylvania to tie back into 611 at the northwest corner of Delaware Water Gap. The old route became US 611 ALT except leading into Portland it had used State St. Between 1953-55, US 611 was removed from 3rd St and Bushkill Dr in Easton. Instead, US 611 was given a one way pair with NB using 3rd to Ferry while SB used 2nd from Ferry to Larry Holmes to Lehigh (no longer a street)west back to 3rd. US 611 then used Ferry to Front St, then the little loop under US 22 to get to N Delaware Dr. 3rd St between from Northampton to Bushkill became an extended PA 90-115 (since decommissioned).
In August 1962 (AASHO), US 611 was added to newly opened freeway around Stroudsburg west to a temporary connection to US 611 at today's Exit 303 on I-80. In October 1962 (AASHO), Pennsylvania revised their application to extend US 611 further along the new freeway to today's Exit 298 north of Tannersville. Pennsylvania wanted the old 611 to be an extension of US 611 ALT but in December 1962 AASHO declined and said US 611 Business should be considered instead. In February 1963, Pennsylvania appealed the rejection of US 611 ALT extending through Stroudsburg. Notably, they said they were studying a new location south of Wind Gap plus today's PA 33 to relocate US 611 away from the Stroudsburg area entirely and both 611 and 611 ALT would disappear there. Pennsylvania supplied more information in April 1963, but was denied 611 ALT again in June 1963. But a Pocono Record photo shows they did post US 611 ALT. In December 1964 (AASHO), US 611 was removed from New Jersey, replacing US 611 ALT between Portland and Stroudsburg. The old route became a bit of NJ 94, I-80 back into PA, and Foxtown Hill Rd. This is also when US 611 was removed from I-80 from Tannersville to Stroudsburg.
Also in December 1964 (AASHO), US 611 north was relocated off city streets in the Scranton area and instead added to I-81E from Drinker St to I-81. The old route became Drinker St then PA 347 into Dunmore and remained US 11 (now just Green Ridge St/Main St/Market St) through Scranton to US 6 (now US 6 Bus).
![]() 1970 Official In December 1971 (AASHO), US 611 was decommissioned. Philadelphia to Tobyhanna became PA 611 (except US 611 used Easton Rd/Main St through Doylestown and the one-way pair in Easton is no longer PA 611); I-81E (now I-380) remained on the duplex heading north; PA 507 through Elmhurst approaching Scranton became PA 435; I-81E (now I-84/380) remained on the last couple miles. | ||||||||||||||||||||
