 Creation: Appeared in November 1967 (NCDOT) as the 3rd US 401 Bus when US 401 was given its bypass around the north of Fayetteville NC.
Adjustments: In January 1975 (NCDOT), US 401 Business was removed from Russell St between Robeson and Gillespie St and from there north on Ramsey St. to the CBD loop. Instead, US 401 Business followed Bragg Rd to the new CDB freeway east back to Ramsey Rd.

In July 1976 (NCDOT), US 401 Business was placed on one-way splits: SB had no changes, using Robeson and Bragg Blvd. NB left Robeson St on the Rankin Cross Link, then north on Winslow St/Hillsboro St to Walter St west to Bragg Blvd.
In June 1992 (AASHTO), US 401 Business was rerouted onto new freeway from Robeson St connecting to the previous freeway 401 Business was using.

 US 401 Bus #4: About 1977, US 15-401 Bypass was redesignated as US 15-401. There is no AASHTO documentation but that is when they did document doing the same thing in Hartsville SC with US 15 Bypass. While US 15 through Bennettsville became US 15 Business, it is unclear if US 401 became US 401 Business as no SCDOT map shows it. There is also no AASHTO documentation of dropping US 15 Business when that happened in 1984 or 1985. Today the route is SC 385 and SC 385 CONN.
