Creation: Created in June 1932 (AASHO) as a new US Route corridor. NC/SC had specifically requested this be US 317. It originally ran from US 17-78 (Columbus St at King St) Charleston SC to US 301 Four Oaks NC. US 701 was a replacement for SC 40 and an addition to NC 23. The original length reported to AASHO was 244 miles.

Adjustments: In July 1934, South Carolina proposed to AASHO replacing US 701 with US 15 from Conway to Georgetown and by inference of the discussion, replaced by proposed US 17 south of there.
In November 1934 (AASHO), US 17 was added to US 701 from Georgetown SC to Charleston, creating a useless multiplex for US 701.
About 1935, US 701 was straightened out between Clinton NC (via Beaman Rd) and Newton Grove, leaving behind what is now College St, NC 403, SR 1751 HB Lewis Rd out of Clinton; SR 1714 Lassiter Rd at Monks Crossroads; SR 1800 Bryan Rd and SR 1703 McLamb Rd/Church St through Newton Grove
In 1947, US 52 was moved to Meeting St, so US 701's south end was moved from Columbus and King to Meeting at Lee.

In 1947 or 1948, US 701 received an eastern bypass of Clinton using newly constructed Southeast and Northeast Blvd. The old route through Clinton using Southwest Blvd, Lisbon St, College St, and Beaman St became US 701-A (all secondary today).
In April 1952 (AASHO), US 701 was rerouted between Homewood SC and Tabor City NC to go via Loris SC, replacing a bit of NC 904 and all of SC 904. The old routing via Green Sea SC became NC/SC 410.

About 1956, US 701 received its bypass west of Whiteville. Both officials and county maps show the old route through town was secondary after that but today it is US 701 Business.

Between 1954-57, US 701 was removed from SR 1517 Barnes Loop Rd, SR 1518 (since abandoned), and SR 1523 Beards Chapel Loop Rd in northern Bladen County NC.
About 1957 (bridge date), US 701 was placed on a bypass east of Tabor City NC. Although maps showed the old route as secondary until 1962, a 1960 document in the AASHO minutes explicitly said the old route through Tabor City was US 701 Business.

Also about 1957, US 701 received its bypass of Clarkton NC. Although maps showed the old route as secondary until 1962, a 1960 document in the AASHO minutes explicitly said the old route through Clarkton was US 701 Business.

In February 1958 (AASHO), SC requested US 701 south be rerouted at Georgetown to replace US 17 ALT to end at US 15 Walterboro SC. This was in conjunction with the bonkers request to have US 5 replace US 17. This obviously didn't happen but there was no reason why this US 701 reroute couldn't still have been done. In fact, nobody uses US 17 ALT to travel from Georgetown to Pocotaligo, so this would still make some sense.
About 1965, US 701 was given its bypass of Ingold NC, leaving behind SR 1157 Old US 701.

In July 1966 (AASHO), US 17-701 was placed on a bypass north around Mount Pleasant, leaving behind US 17-701 Business (now SC 703 and I-526 Business)

In March 1973 (NCDOT), US 701 was given its bypass around the west of Clinton NC by following the US 421 freeway plus new construction back to the old routing. This left behind US 701 Business.

Maps are quite vague but I believe that in 1974 US 701 was removed from downtown Conway SC to follow the US 501 Bypass plus used US 501 Business 16th Ave to get back over to US 701's routing north of Conway. The old route became US 501 Business on Main St and SC 905 on 4th Ave.
In June 1992 (AASHTO), US 701 was truncated to US 17/17 ALT in Georgetown SC. The route to Charleston remained US 17 (today the bridge to Charleston has been replaced and downtown what remains driveable is a tiny bit of Lee St).

Comments: US 701 is a fairly quiet route that can be used as an alternative route to the Souith Carolina Grand Strand (via SC 9 or SC 22). It can also be a viable alternative for US 17 through traffic trying to avoid the Grand Strand, via SC 90.
Although US 701 has never been anywhere near there, a sign for Raleigh exists on US 701 at SC 9 Business in Loris!
