Creation: Appeared in December 1952 (AASHO) as a new US Highway corridor. Ran from US 98 just east of Santa Rosa Beach to US 31-80-82 (now Perry at Madison) Montgomery AL. This is the 3rd US 331. US 331 was an addition to: FL 83 from US 98 to De Funiak Springs; a brief US 90 overlay; FL 187 to Alabama; AL 55 to Florala AL; AL 15 to Opp; AL 98, AL 86, and AL 52 to Brantley; US 29 overlay to Luverne; AL 9 to Montgomery.

Adjustments: In May 1958, Alabama requested US 331 be extended north with US 231 to Sylacauga; over US 231 ALT to Lincoln; new primary routing to Atalla; over US 431 to Guntersville; added to AL 79 to end at US 72 (now AL 35-279) Scottsboro. In July 1958, AASHO replied that Alabama needed to clarify its US routes related to US x31. Alabama then agereed to drop US 231 ALT. AASHO said it would come up for a vote at the next meeting.
In December 1958, AASHO informed Alabama that action on the US 331 extension was withheld due to complaints from AAA and others, they would need to meet with AASHO to study simplifing their US routes. There was no further documentation on this and US 331 was not extended.
About 1960, US 331 was put on one-way splits in downtown Montgomery AL. SB used the original Perry St. to Fairview Ave EB. NB now left Fairview on Hull St.

About 1967, US 331 was given its direct routing to US 90 De Funiak Springs FL from I-10. Before it used Bruce Ave and 11th St to reach US 90.
About 1970, US 331 was removed from an east abandonded loop over the now-abandoned railroad just north of the Covington County AL rest area.
About 1971, US 331 was removed from CR 43 Old Three Notch Rd and AL 141 in the Weed Corner area south of Brantley AL.
In 1977 or 1978, US 331 was removed from Norman Bridge Rd south of US 80-82 South Blvd. in Montgomery, which became AL 277 (since decommissioned as the road is closed at Norman Bridge). US 331 instead used new alignment up to South Blvd as an extended Court St, then went east with US 80-82 back to Norman Bridge Rd.
In June 1990 (AASHTO), US 331 north was trucated to US 80-82 south of downtown Montgomery, leaving behind US 80-82 on South Blvd; Norman Bridge Rd, one way pair of Union St and Decatur St.

US 331 #1: Appeared in a February 1926 telegram from AASHO to Georgia as the assigned number on a route created January 1926 from Dothan AL to Brunswick GA. The telegram notes it will probably change.
In July 1926, AASHO informed Georgia that this corridor will be US 84.

The choice of 331 makes no sense. There is a 1926 document in the Kentucky AASHO file where they move to change US 31 at Nashville TN to replace US 41 to Chattanooga, but have US 25 replace US 41 from there to Naples FL. So US 331 wouldn't connect to US 31. There is a national map that shows some proposed numberings that didn't pan out by 1927. This map shows the 31-41-25 reroutings, but shows US 84 out of Brunswick going not only to Dothan but on to Montgomery AL, where US 31 had originally (and eventually again) run. It even showed a US 184 from Dothan to US 90 in Florida (the 1925 plan had US 231 from US 90 through Dothan to Montgomery and no route west out of Brunswick). Since the telegram was in response to a request from Georgia, maybe the Dothan reference was there just to show where it entered Georgia? Did this original US 331 actually go to Montgomery? Unfortunately, there are no 1926 documents in the AASHO database for Alabama or Florida which might help sort out what was proposed.

US 331 #2: Appeared on the final release of the US route system in November 1926, running from US 90 Pensacola to US 31 Flomaton AL. This was an addition to FL 7 and (I believe) AL 3 Spur
In August 1934 (AASHO), US 331 was renumbered to US 29.
Today the routing is US 29 to just past FL 296; CR 95A N. Palafox St to just past 10 Mile Rd; Crowl Ln; destroyed routing, then Pompano St to Tate Rd back to US 29; US 29 for a bit then CR 95A through Cottage Hill and Molino Crossroads back to US 29; US 29 to US 31 except at state line, US 331 veered northeast on abandoned routing to Houston St back to US 29.
Alabama was showing US 331 on its official maps as late as 1938.
