Creation: Created about 1957 as a renumbering of US 701 when it got its western bypass of Clarkton. This is the 2nd US 701 Business. Although maps showed the route as secondary until 1962, a 1960 document in the AASHO minutes explicitly said the old route through Clarkton was US 701 Business.

Creation: Created between 1963-68 as a renumbering of SR 1704 and SR 1917 through Whiteville. This had been mainline US 701 until 1956 when it got its western bypass of Whiteville. This is the 3rd US 701 Business.
| Adjustments: In June 2012 (NCDOT), US 701 Business was reconfigured at its southern end to cut west on SR 1973 Leslie Newsome Ave to reach US 701. South of there US 701 Business became SR 1974 to NC 130 and abandoned from there to its original southern end. Comments: Uses Madison St and Pinckney St through Whiteville. US 701 Business is posted from US 701-NC 130 at Leslie Newsome Ave but as of 2024 there are zero postings where US 701 Business turns to/from Madison St. US 701 Business is blown off by the US 74-76 freeway.

Creation: Created March 1973 (NCDOT) as a renumbering of US 701 through Clinton NC when mainline US 701 got its western bypass of Clinton. This is the 5th US 701 Business.

US 701 Bus #4: Appeared in July 1966 (AASHO) as renumbering of US 701 through Mt. Pleasant SC. US 17-701 was placed on a new bypass north of town.

In June 1992 (AASHTO), US 17-701 Business was replaced by an extended SC 703 and the new I-526 Business. This was part of the same application package that truncated US 701 to Georgetown. By the 1980s, US 701 Business was poorly posted. Notably, the 1966 BGS on US 17-701 NB leaving the Cooper River Bridge approaching the interchange with US 17-701 Business had only US 17 Business on it (while US 17-701 was on the other BGS).
