US 550 Business: Created in December 1980 (AASHTO) when US 550 was given its bypass around the west and south of Durango.
The first official map to show the bypass was the 1982 issue and it labeled the old route CO 3. There is no further documentation regarding US 550 Business, although it was on the 1989 AASHTO log. I also cannot locate a La Plata County map that could help. Perhaps the state or the city of Durango changed their mind, which is consistent with CO 3 being truncated to Larry Valdez Way south of downtown. The route through downtown used E 8th Ave/E 3rd St/E 3rd Ave/College Dr over to the bypass. Note that College Dr west of Main St was never part of US 550, which used Main St north out of town.
US 550 Business was fully concurrent with US 160 Business, to whatever extent they existed.
There are still a couple US 160-550 shields (bannerless) downtown.
