Adjustments: In July 1949 (AASHO), US 521 was rerouted in Williamsburg County to run directly from Andrews to Salters and Greeleyville on its way to Manning. This was a replacement of SC 171 to Greeleyville and SC 261 to Manning. The old way via Kingstree became part of SC 377 and SC 261 (about half of the US 52 overlay has been rerouted over the Black River Swamp). This shaved 5 miles off US 521's route.

Also in 1949, US 521 was given its routing around Alcolu, leaving behind US 301 CON through Alcolu and S-14-401 near Harvin.

Between 1947-50, US 521 was moved to its bypass of Kershaw, replacing US 521 ALT. The old route through Kershaw became US 521 Business. Note this wasn't requested from AASHTO until 2004!

In 1961, US 521 was rerouted at the Sumter-Kershaw Line to run more directly towards Camden via new construction. This left behind S-43-2, S-28-2, and an extended SC 261.

Approved in October 1965 by AAASHO and opened about 1967, US 521 received its current bypass of Lancaster, leaving behind US 521 Business (Main St between Market St and Barr St is now S-29-2)

In Oct 1968 (NCDOT), US 521 was extended north, replacing US 21 along Pineville Rd and South Blvd, then west along Moorehead St to end at US 29 Graham St. Official State Maps from 1969-74 showed a US 21-521 duplex into downtown Charlotte, while the 1972 Mecklenburg County map showed only US 21 north of Woodlawn.
Starting in 1974, US 521 is shown on Georgetown County maps extending east of US 17 on Highmarket St to the Georgetown waterfront, then east on St. James St back over to US 17 at the Pee Dee River Bridge. County maps back to 1953 imply it could have been like that back to then. US 521 was definitely posted with a double arrow from both directions on US 17 Fraser St throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. However I never saw any 521 postings where St James meets 17.
In March 1976 (NCDOT), US 521 was rerouted to head west off South Blvd along Woodlawn Rd to end at NC 49. Official maps showed it erroneously ending at I-77/US 21. The old routing of US 521 into central Charlotte became secondary.

In Jan 1985 (NCDOT), US 521 was extended north from NC 49 to I-85 along the new Billy Graham Pkwy.
In 1987, US 521 received some of its bypass of Dalzell north of Sumter, leaving behind S-44-1342. US 521 used S-42-91 to get from the unfinished bypass back to original US 521.
In 1988, US 521 received the rest of the Dalzell bypass and SC 441 interchange leaving behind more S-44-1342.

In July 1995 (NCDOT), US 521 was removed from Lancaster Hwy and moved to Johnson Rd below I-485, resulting in an I-485 duplex from Exit 61 to 65.
In May 2003 (AASHTO), US 521 was rerouted in Sumter. Up to now it came up Manning St then used Bartlette St over to Washington St then north to follow US 76 Business. Now, it followed US 15 Lafayette St north to US 401 Calhoun St west to Washington St.
In Sept 2003 (NCDOT), US 521 north was truncated to I-485, leaving behind I-485 and secondary routes to I-85. Billy Graham Pkwy is also signed as Charlotte 4.

In October 2009 (AASHTO), US 521 was rerouted in Sumter to essentially bypass it to the west - Guignard Pkwy, then replaced most of US 15 CON on Guignard Dr to US 76 Business northwest of Downtown. The old route became S-44-1496 on Manning Rd south of US 15; US 15 on Lafayette; US 401 on Calhoun; US 76 Business on Washington St.
