Creation: Created without assigned number in July 1926 in the period between the original 1925 preliminary list and the final list in November 1926. The number first appears on the November 1926 US route list AASHO sent to Pennsylvania. It originally ran from US 22 Lewiston PA to US 11-111 (now Market St) Selinsgrove PA.
| Adjustments: There are some 1927 documents regarding Pennsylvania's unhappiness with the routes and numbers assigned. In March 1927 AASHO and Pennsylvania reworked an AASHO map of the November 1926 designations. US 622 was changed to leave Mt. Union east with US 22 to Lewistown, replacing US 522.
When the first formal list of US routes came out in May 1927, US 622 was not on it. Instead, US 622 was renumbered as US 522. On June 7, 1927, Pennsylvania sent a list of corrections to the May 1927 US Route list. Included was the fact that all of US 522 was supposed to be US 622. A June 10 internal AASHO memo recommended changing 522 back to 622. However, the June 14 AASHO response letter to Pennsylvania affirmed US 522 "in order to have numbers which are offshoots of US No. 22 to run consecutively." There are other examples of AASHO doing this, most notably in renumberings related to the US 60-66 swap in New Mexico. I will note that they did not renumber all the US 11 offshoots so that US 611 would be US 111.
![]() 1930 Clasons By 1928, US 522 was removed from Whipperwill Ln/abandoned/Wava Ln east of Scrub Ridge PA; Snyder Ave to Beaver Springs PA and Spruce St/Center Ave/Gross Rd to Beavertown PA; Paxtonville Rd through Paxtonville PA and PA 104 into Middleburg PA. About 1930, US 522 was removed from Barnetts Run Rd through Dott PA/SR 3013 Sipes Mill Rd; PA 655/Martin Rd east out of Needmore PA; Knobsville Rd through Knobsville PA; Menious Rd near Ft Littleton PA Also by 1930, US 522 was removed from Lucy Furnace Rd east of Mt Union PA About 1933, US 522 was removed from Old State Rd/Lombard St/Market St/Holiday St through McVeytown PA. Sometime in the 1930s, US 522 was removed from Poplar St/abandoned bridge leaving Mt Union, plus some US 22. Instead, US 522 used Jefferson St across the Juniata River. About 1937, US 522 was removed from Ferguson Valley Rd/Big Greenbriar Rd in Atkinson PA. By 1940, US 522 was removed from abandoned/PA 103 approaching Allenport PA; Caldwell Hill Rd and Old 22 Rd west of Lewistown PA; Swineheart Dr in Middleburg PA; Sale Barn Rd east of Middleburg PA About 1941, US 522 was removed from University Ave/Pine St into Selinsgrove PA. US 522 now ended at Market St right at the bridge over Penns Creek. In May 1941 (AASHO) deferred a request to extend US 522 south to Powhatan VA. West Virginia apparently posted their segment anyway and based on this AASHO approved US 522 extending from Hancock MD to US 60 near Powhatan in July 1943 replacing WV 522 and VA 522. In Hancock, US 522 was removed from Limestone Rd (now unsigned MD 894) and routed onto its bridge over now-MD 144 and the Potomac River.
In April 1944 (CTB), US 522 was removed from the Chester Gap loop south of Front Royal VA. About 1948, US 522 was removed from Hess Ln/abandoned/T-703 northeast of Mt. Union PA. About 1949, US 522 was removed from Kreamer Ave/Freeburg Rd through Kreamer PA; abandoned/Nellis Dr/abandoned/Old Rte 522/SR 1011 Salem Rd between Kreamer PA and west of Selinsgrove. In Aug 1950 (CTB), US 522 was placed on one-way splits in Winchester VA. NB US 522 on Cameron had not been primary up to this point. In Feb 1951 (CTB), US 522 was removed from SR 719 in Spotsylvania/Louisa County.
About 1960 (bridge date) US 522 was given its direct routing through Berkeley Springs. Previously within Berkeley Springs it cut west on Fairfax St to Wilkes Ave (still original concrete!) which used to continue north out to current US 522 at roughly Jimtown Rd.
Also about 1960, US 522 was removed from downtown Lewistown PA by following Juniata St along the river, then cutting east on Charles St to the new US 322 freeway, then north on the freeway back to Walnut St. The old route used Market St/Logan St/Walnut St through central Lewistown. It appears that US 522 was removed from SR 802 Ninevah VA about 1961. In May 1964 (CTB), US 522 was straightened out in the South Anna River area. About 1965, US 522 was placed onto I-70 between Hancock MD and Warfordsburg PA. The old routing was Warfordsburg Rd/Bucks Valley Rd/PA 484 through Warfordsburg, plus SR 3019. Also about 1965, US 522 was removed from Wilson Ln near and Johnson Ln/Mentzer Ln through Mentzer PA; Piper Ln north of Mentzer; Main St through Shade Gap PA In Jan 1966 (CTB), US 522 was rerouted in Front Royal VA to its current routing. Up to this point US 522 had cut west on Main St from Commerce to US 340.
In Oct 1966 (CTB), US 522 was removed from SRs 679/789 in Albin VA. In March 1967 (CTB), US 522 was removed from SR 675 at Massies Corner VA. About 1968, US 522 was removed from Starr Farm Rd north of Shade Gap PA In June 1971 (AASHO), US 522 was given its bypass of Washington, VA leaving behind US 211-522 Bus.
In March 1973 (CTB), US 522 was removed from SR 668 and the Maidens Loop as a new James River Bridge was built. In March 1975 (CTB), US 522 was removed from SR 684 Gainesboro. In July 1976 (AASHTO), US 522 was extended north over US 11-15 out to the new US 11-15 alignment that bypasses Selinsgrove PA.
In April 1987 (CTB), US 522 was removed from the SR 701/771 and SR 693/770 loops in the Cross Junction VA area. About 1987, US 522 was removed from Pump Station Rd/abandoned/Keystone Rd out of Shirleysburg PA About 1998, US 522 was placed on its bypass east of Mount Union. The old route used Shirley St and Jefferson St leaving Mt Union, plus a bit of US 22. In Feb 1999 (CTB), US 522 was straightened out in the Armel VA area leaving behind SR 760. About 2005, US 522 was given its bypass around the west and north of Lewistown PA. This left behind Old Caldwell Hill Rd/US 22 Bus into Lewistown; Charles St and a little of the US 322 freeway leaving Lewistown. Note that US 522 NB has to use Logan St from the freeway to get to Walnut St to head east out of town.
Comments: US 522 is an excellent cutoff for travelers trying to go from I-81 NB to I-68 or I-70 WB. This will be even moreso once the Berkeley Springs bypass is fully finished. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
