Adjustments: Between 1971-76, US 422 Bus was given one-way splits in downtown Reading, as Penn St was taken off the primary system. EB uses 2nd St to Franklin (this had been US 422 ALT not long before). WB uses 11th St to Washington St to 2nd St.

About 1977, US 422 Bus was extended west to accomodate the US 222 interchange to meet US 422 at its current interchange. Prior to this, US 422 Bus cut northwest very near Evans Ave in Wyomissing to an at-grade intersection with US 422. This connector was physically destroyed.
Comments: Uses Penn Ave west of the Schuykill River; a bit of Penn St; the one-way alignments described above; Perkiomen Ave; the longtime one-way split of Mineral Spring Rd/Howard Blvd (WB)/Perkiomen Ave (EB); Perkiomen Ave

Creation: In November 1975, an application to extend US 224 through New Castle PA over what had been US 422 was shown as 'deferred' with no explanation. In November 1976 (AASHTO), there was an approval to relocate US 422 Business. This means that US 422 Business was likely created in early 1976 as a resolution to the US 224 application.
Adjustments: In November 1976 (AASHTO), US 422 Business was moved from State St to Sampson St coming off of what is now I-376. State St became secondary but is now again part of US 224.
Comments: Uses Sampson St; Falls St; Jefferson St; Grove St; Neal St; Taylor St; Butler Ave
