Creation: Appeared September 1926 as a renumbering of what was in the 1925 plan as US 22 from US 20 Cleveland OH to US 22 (now High St) Ebensburg PA. It is unclear if US 422 followed US 22 to the center of town or not.

Adjustments: It appears that about 1929 was when US 422 was removed from Blaney Rd and Rau Dr, plus Lasher Rd/abandoned/SR 2012 east of Kittanning PA; Adams Rd/abandoned, Blanket Hill Rd, and Sandy Flat Rd near Blanket Hill PA; Run Around Rd near Elderton PA
Also about 1929, US 422 was removed from Stone House Ln in Nolo PA and a long abandoned alignment east of there.
By 1930, US 422 was removed from Shehy St/Oak St Ext from Youngstown OH to New Bedford PA. US 422 now used Rigby St/McCartney Rd east out of Youngstown.
Also by 1930, US 422 was removed from East Butler Rd to East Butler PA; Grant Ave/abandoned back to Heist Rd; also removed from Keck Rd.

In 1932, US 422 was rerouted out of Ebensburg PA onto its current alignment out to Belsano. The old route via Nanty Glo became PA 45 (now SR 3034 Beulah Rd to Nanty Glo, then PA 271 to Belsano). As before, it is unclear if US 422 followed US 22 to Center St.
In May 1936, Ohio requested that US 422 be extended west with US 6 to Sandusky OH, then over OH 2 to Toledo. AASHO denied this request in December 1936.
By the late 1930s, US 422 was removed from Kern Rd east of Portersville PA; Greenwood Dr east of Mt. Chesnut PA; Alameda Rd, abandoned/Barracks Rd, the weird little New Castle Rd crescent, and New Caste Street (if it ever used it) within Butler PA
Also by the late 1930s, US 422 was removed from Northern Ave/Pine Hill Rd in West Kittanning PA.
Also in the late 1930s, US 422 was removed from Dutch Run Rd/Dead End Rd/abandoned/bit of PA 210/abandoned/Main St through Elderton PA.
About 1938, US 422 was removed from McShane Rd and placed on Old Rte 422 well east of E. Butler PA.
In 1940, US 422 was rerouted in Youngstown to use Rayen Ave past Belmont Ave to Hines Ave south to pick up Wilson St. The old route through downtown used Belmont south to Federal St to Wilson St.

Between 1945-47, US 422 was removed from OH 305 and Warren-Burton Rd through Southington OH.
About 1948, US 422 was removed from PA 208 to New Bedford PA; Marr Rd/Matthews Rd/Old Youngstown Rd; US 224 into New Castle PA. US 422 now entered New Caste via Sampson St.
About 1949, US 422 was removed from US 19 to Portersville PA; PA 488 through Prospect PA; W Old Rte 422 to Mount Prospect PA.
About 1950, US 422 was removed from the very lengthy Old US Hwy 422 segments between New Castle PA and US 19.

Between 1952-58, US 422 was rerouted in New Castle PA to stay on Jefferson St south to Grove St east to Neal St south to Taylor St east past Washington St onto US 422's route out of town. The old route of Washington St appears to have remained PA 88 (now PA 65).

About 1958, US 422 was rerouted in Cleveland to leave Woodland Ave at E. 22nd St to reach US 21 Orange Ave. Woodland Ave west of 22nd was removed west of 9th St (today none of Woodland exists west of 22nd).
Also about 1958, US 422 was removed from Old Hwy 422/abandoned/Shelocta Rd/Main St through Shelocta PA/abandoned/Wood Rd/Sycamore Rd; also from nearby Lawton Rd.
by 1958, US 422 received one way splits in Butler PA. WB used the original routing on Jefferson St; EB used Cunningham St/McKean St.
Between 1952-59, US 422 was removed from Teamster Dr/abandoned/Funston Dr/abandoned/Federal St/Mosier Pl in northwestern Youngstown (some of this is still paved in brick!)
About 1960, US 422 was removed from Washington St east of Auburn Corners/underwater LaDue Reservoir alignment that meets US 422 at about the Shaw Rd intersection.
Also about 1960, US 422 was removed from Hines/Wilson/Rigby/Old McCartney in eastern Youngstown to use Oak St to today's Old McCartney Rd.
Between 1960-62, US 422 was placed on the one-way pair through the I-77 interchange area. At first the EB alignment used Orange and 30th to get back to Woodland Av, while WB uses the current slip ramp from Woodland to Orange.
In December 1962 (AASHO), US 422 was given its bypass around the north of Butler PA and also placed on new alignment from west of Worthington to Kittanning. The old routes are: New Castle Rd; PA 386 into Butler (used WB Jefferson St downtown); PA 68; Kittanning St/Mitchell Hill Rd; west of Worthington US 422 was removed from T492; Graff Farm Rd; abandoned/Main St through Worthington/Butler Rd to Kittanning; PA 286 to Franklin Hill Rd where the new US 422 routing came in.

About 1966, US 422 was given separate alignments in Warren OH. EB started following Parkman Rd all the way to Market St back to Chestnut St. WB continued using the previous US 422 routing of Summit Ave/Mahoning Ave/High St to reach Chestnut Ave (became US 422 ALT, but now unnumbered)

About 1969, US 422 was removed from a length underwater alignment in Lake Arthur, plus Park Rd east of the Old 422 Boat Ramp.
Also about 1969, US 422 received its original Indiana PA bypass via new freeway to PA 954; 6th St north; Indian Springs Rd/Ben Franklin Rd around to where it meets Philadelphia Rd. The old route became Chestnut Ridge Rd/abandoned/underwater/SR 1002 Pike Rd/PA 286/SR 4032 Philadelphia St to where the original bypass came out at Ben Franklin Rd.

Between 1963-70, US 422 EB was removed from 30th St in Cleveland to use the current slip ramp over to Woodland Ave.
In November 1970 (AASHO), US 422 was removed from Martin Luther King Jr Blvd/Ryen Ave/Oak St through central Youngstown OH.

About 1971, US 422's bypass of Indiana was changed by US 422 using new freeway from PA 954 to US 119 south to Wayne Ave north to Indiana Springs Rd.
About 1974, US 422 was moved from Grant St to Falls Rd coming into New Castle.
In November 1975 (AASHTO), US 422 was given its southern bypass of New Castle PA, and Pennsylvania had requested leaving behind US 224. The application was shown as 'deferred' with no explanation and a November 1976 application was submitted to change US 422 Business' routing.

About 1975, US 422 was rerouted in Warren OH by leaving Market St at South St which it uses to Warren Blvd. Then the US 422 WB route through northern Warren was dropped. The old route used Market St/Chestnut Ave; US 422 was also removed from Youngstown Rd SE.
In June 1980 (AASHTO), US 422 was given its southern bypass of West Kittanning, then used PA 66 north back to the existing route at Kittanning. The old route west of PA 268 became part of PA 268. The rest went unnumbered for 20 years but is now US 422 Business.
In October 1991 (AASHTO), US 422 east was truncated to the new US 219 freeway in western Ebensburg, leaving behind Ben Franklin Hwy/Main St/Rowena through Ebensburg.

About 1995, US 422 was rerouted to bypass Moreland Hills, Chagrin Falls, and Auburn Center OH, by using I-271 south a couple miles, then east replacing US 422 ALT to OH 44. The old route remained OH 87 to the Moreland Hills area, then Chagrin Blvd and Orange St to Chagrin Falls, then Main St, then Washington St to Auburn Corners, and remained OH 44 south to the US 422 freeway.

In 2015, US 422 west was truncated 1 block to S. Roadway, as Ontario St through Public Square was destroyed.
About 2024, US 422 was removed from SR 2068/abandoned east of Whitesburg PA.
Comments: US 422 west of Ebensburg is a decent corridor throughout Pennsylvania. In Ohio, large portions are a slog.
