Creation: First proposed in April 1989 (AASHTO) as a new US Highway from US 165 Bastrop LA to US 65 Pine Bluff AR. AASHTO deferred action pending additional technical information which was submitted in August. AASHTO approved US 425 in October 1989. US 425 was a replacement for LA 139 from Bastrop to Arkansas, then replacing AR 81 through Monticello and Star City to US 65. This is the 2nd US 425.
|
Adjustments: In December 2001 (AASHTO), US 425 was extended north 3 miles with US 65 to I-530. In May 2005 (AASHTO), US 425 was extended south over US 165 to Mer Rouge, then replaced LA 133 to Oak Ridge, then LA 137 to Archibald, followed LA 15 to Clayton, then replaced US 65 to end at US 61-84 Natchez MS. Louisiana tried 3 different times to get US 98 onto the majority of this corridor between 1955-68. AASHO even approved one of these requests if Louisiana would assign it as US 265 which they declined to do.
Comments: The choice of 425 as the number of this corridor makes no sense. US 265 would have made far more sense for this route, or for US 65 to be relocated to this corridor with US 265 replacing US 65 from Clayton LA to Pine Bluff AR. | ||||||||||

US 425 #1: n the 1926 Kentucky folder of AASHO documents, there is a map with proposed changes to US 25 in Kentucky and Michigan, including US 425 running from Corbin KY to Knoxville instead of US 25. The map must be older than March 1926 when US 52 was replaced with US 62 across WV/VA.
There is no document that seems to go with this map to explain who floated this or why. At this time Kentucky was trying to get an x0 route across the state. |
