Creation:  Appeared as a renumbering of a piece of US 17 in 1941. Ran like it does today. This is the 3rd VA 306.
Adjustments:  In 1959, VA 306 was extended southeast with US 60 then west on Cedar Ln and Museum Dr around the Mariner Museum to the current US 60-VA 312 jct.
Between 1978-82, the Harpersville Rd junction with US 60 was moved northward, leaving behind Old Harpersville Rd.
In 1986, VA 306 was truncated to end at US 60/Harpersville Rd.
Improvements:  Paved upon inception; a brief multilane segment leaving US 60
Posting:  Fully posted at US 60; by the mid-2000s VA 306 has since been no longer posted at US 17/VA 143.
As of 2019 the only 306 shield on VA 306 itself is an END assembly at US 60.
Vintage white border signs were still on US 60 into the 1990s.

Comment:  A logical extension would be eastward across Hampton Roads Center Parkway, which ends at the US 17/VA 143-VA 306 junction.

VA 306 #1:  Appeared in August 1928. Ran from VA 13 (curr US 60) Mt. Rush to a few miles south of Appomattox, all replacing the original VA 104.

In December 1930 (CTB Minutes), VA 306 was extended south 0.87 miles towards the Charlotte County Line. Also, VA 306 was extended north to 2.47 miles north of VA 13 (current US 60) toward Glenmore.
Also in Dec 1930, a second piece appeared north 6.73 miles north from VA 20 (curr VA 40) Phenix.
In July 1932 (CTB Minutes), VA 306 was extended 6.37 more miles south towards Charlotte County. Also, VA 306 was extended north 1.13 miles towards Glenmore, ending at Mt. Vinco.
Also in July 1932, the second piece of VA 306 was extended south 4.67 miles from VA 20 (current VA 40) Phenix towards Clover.
In July 1933, VA 306 became VA 26 south of Appomattox (including the separate Phenix piece), part of VA 131, VA 24 from Appomattox to Bent Creek, the easternmost piece of VA 56 and all of VA 283.
Today it is SR 727 (except it used SR 604/694), VA 131, VA 24, VA 56, and SR 602.
