US 412 Business #3, #4, #5: In October 2000, ArDOT submitted an odd application where on its face seemed to eliminate any US route with a US 412 concurrency across Arkansas. This was 155 miles of US 62, 41 miles of US 63, 12 miles of US 65, and 2 miles of US 67. Reading the application it is understandable why AASHTO thought this was what Arkansas was requesting, which of course AASHTO denied to prevent 4 discontinuous US routes.
Arkansas submitted revised route logs of those 4 routes plus US 412. Looking at them carefully, you can see the intent was to make US 412 the preferred routing across northern Arkansas (which probably meant signing it only as US 412 on the overlays, as Arkansas was doing for most concurrencies at that time). The route logs for US 62, US 63, US 65, and US 67 all had their US 412 overlays included with their respective mileages and thus weren't truly eliminating anything. So in my opinion they didn't need to send an application at all. On the revised US 412 log, they did renumber US 62 Business through Cotter and Mountain Home, plus US 65 Business through Harrison, as 3 new US 412 Businesses. It is unclear why they did not go through with the business route numbering at any point since then. |
