Creation: Appeared November 1926 (AASHO) as a late addition to the US Route System. It ran from US 50 (now SR 723) Millwood VA to US 15-40-240 (now Market St at Patrick St) Frederick MD. This is the 2nd US 340. US 340 was added to VA 251 from Millwood to Berryville; VA 376 in Berryville; VA 37 to WV; WV 50 to MD; new numbering in Maryland to Frederick.
|
Adjustments: In July 1933 (CTB), US 340 was rerouted at Old Chapel to replace a piece of VA 54 to instead end at US 50 (now SR 723) in Boyce. A substantial VA 340 extension extended south from US 50 all the way to Augusta County. The old road to Millwood became VA 255. In July 1935 (per map), US 340 was rerouted at Berryville to instead follow VA 7 west to end at US 11 (Picadilly at Loudoun St) in Winchester. Berryville to Boyce became part of VA 12 (today this is SR 617 Old Chapel Rd, a bit of VA 255, some current US 340, SR 616 S. Church St, and 1 block of VA 7 Bus Main St in Berryville). Oddly, a 1952 AASHO document says this occurred in March 1934 but those CTB Minutes do not mention moving US 340. Further, this 1952 document says VA 340 was posted as US 340. There was a lot of confusion on Virginia Official maps regarding where US 340 ran. AASHO sent Virginia its list of routes with Millwood as the endpoint. Virginia did not question this. US 340 was not really mentioned again in AASHO records until January 1935, when Virginia questioned the American Highways log of US 340 going to Winchester while the map used by AASHO had it going to "Boyce as it always has." The Boyce reference further muddies the situation. The Virginia Highway Department may have been playing fast and loose, as Millwood and Boyce are very close to each other, but confusion occurs because a different state highway goes to each from the south of Berryville and Virginia appears to have rerouted US 340 twice already. Absence of signage photos keeps it all a mystery.
In 1936 (bridge date), US 340 was removed from SR 623 in Gaylord near the West Virginia line. About 1950, US 340 was rerouted out of Harpers Ferry WV to cross the Shenandoah River into Loudoun County VA then over to cross the Potomac River into Maryland. At the bridge locations this was a replacement for bits of VA 275 and VA 275Y. The old route: US 340 ALT into Harpers Ferry; Sandy Hook Rd in Maryland.
Originally approved in July 1952 (AASHO), but hung up with controversy about US 340 ALT, US 340 was rerouted at Berryville VA in July 1953 (AASHO) to again go south to Boyce, then continue south through Front Royal, Luray, Elkton, Waynesboro, and stuarts Draft before ending at US 11 near Greenville VA. This was a replacement of VA 12. The old route from Berryville to Winchester became US 340 ALT (now VA 7 Bus within Berryville and VA 7 for the rest) as well as a new US 340 ALT.
In March 1954 (CTB), US 340 was removed from SRs 667-668 west of Boyce. In August 1958 (CTB), US 340 was placed on its bypass of White Post VA, leaving behind SR 628 and SR 658. About 1961, US 340-522 was removed from SR 802 Ninevah VA. In June 1968 (AASHO), US 340 was placed on new freeway from the Potomac River to Frederick, leaving behind two segments of MD 180 (the southern piece is now Keep Tryst Rd in Weaverton); a piece of Himes Rd in Frederick; Jefferson St east of US 15-40. Note that the 1964 Washington and Frederick County maps showed this freeway as completed and official maps showed it completed in 3 stages.
In February 1969 (CTB), US 340 was approved to be placed on Page County VA SR 615 and the US 211 Luray Bypass when constructed, with the old route through Stanley and Luray VA becoming US 340 Business. When the Jan 1972 CTB placed US 211 on the bypass, it made no mention of US 340. The Dec 1971 AASHO approval of US 211 Bypass-Business does not mention US 340. Oddly, US 340 Bypass is explicitly shown on the 1972 and 1973 officials. In 1971, US 340 was placed on new construction east of Charlestown WV to near Harpers Ferry. This left behind CR 340/6 Somerset Blvd; CR 340/12 and CR 23 (now WV 230) through Halltown WV. In June 1975, AASHTO turned down Maryland's request to truncate US 340 north to the US 15 split near Jefferson MD. Between 1976-80, US 340 was removed from abandoned, CR 340/15, and more abandoned at the US 340 ALT junction area in Bolivar WV. In June 1991 (AASHTO), US 340 was given its bypass of Charlestown WV. The old route through town became CR 340/18 Augustine Ave and an extended WV 51.
US 340 Original routing through Jefferson County 1949 Jefferson County
US 340 revised routings through Jefferson County 2004 Jefferson County In June 1992 (AASHTO), US 340 was finally added to Page SR 615 and US 211 to Bypass Luray leaving behind US 340 Business.
About 2008, US 340 was removed from SR 665 Overall Rd in Overall VA About 2013, US 340 was removed from F1112 north of Rileyville VA. In 2026, US 340 was removed from Berryville Pike through Rippon WV. Comments: Much of US 340 is a scenic drive along the eastern side of the Shenandoah Valley. Previous US 340's:
