In June 1941, at the request of Kansas, AASHO re-described US 383 to replace US 83 all the way to US 30 Elm Creek NE.
About 1950, US 383 was removed from abandoned alignment starting 2.7 miles north of the KS/NE border/Old US 183/underwater routing/abandoned/Church St/Division St through Alma NE, then Old US 183 north of town.
In June 1960 (AASHO), US 383 south was truncated to US 136 Alma NE. The route north to US 30 remained US 183 (except US 383 used abandoned west loop at 720 Rd south of NE 4; abandoned diagonal at the Harlan/Phelps County line/O Rd/Lincoln St to Holdrege NE, US 6-34 through town back to US 183).

About 1963, US 383 was removed from County Rd Q/abandoed bridge/rest area access road east of Oronoque KS.
In October 1979 (AASHTO), US 383 was dropped from the US route system, though Kansas Official maps had it until at least 1982. Oakley to Selden KS remained US 83 (except US 383 used Freeman St, Front St, Center Ave, 8th St, Old US 83 through Oakley; abandoned right angle where Lacey Rd and CR 29 meet near Gem; County Road V, CR 32, abandoned along RR/County Road W, CR 35, County Road X/School St and Williams St through Wexford; Front St; 6th St, Kentucky Ave, frontage road in Selden; Rd 135 and Rd 60 east of Selden); Selden to Woodruff KS became KS 383 (except US 383 used Old 383 Ln/Railroad Ave to Clayton); Woodruff to Alma NE remained US 183 .
