Creation: Appeared in November 1951 (AASHO), running from US 78 Washington GA to US 501 (now US 501 Bus) Conway SC. South Carolina wanted US 378 to also replace US 501 to Myrtle Beach but AASHO disapproved that. US 378 was added to GA 47 from Washington to Lincolnton and GA 43 to South Carolina.

US 378 Columbia-Sumter-Conway 1956 Shell Adjustments: In 1952, US 378 was removed from an abandoned loop north at the Hard Labor Creek bridge area east of McCormick SC. In 1957, US 378 received its bypass of Lake City, leaving behind US 378 Business.
Also in 1957, US 378 was removed from the concrete Arthur Rd loop west of Shaw AFB. In Nov 1958 (SCDOT), US 378 was given a bypass of Sumter around the north side, South Carolina's first freeway. The old route became US 378 Business (now US 76 Business and SC 763).
In October 1961, AASHO turned down a request to extend US 378 west to end at US 72 Scottsboro AL. US 378 would have been added to US 78 west to Athens GA, US 129 to Gainesville, GA 141 (now GA 369) then US 19 (now GA 9)to Cumming, GA 20 to Cartersville, the soon-to-open relocated US 411 to Rome, and GA 20 to Alabama. In Alabama it would have been added to AL 9 a short distance, then AL 35 through Fort Payne to Scottsboro. About 1998, US 378 west was extended a short distance over US 78 to the new current alignment of US 78 outside Washington GA. About 2004, US 378 was realigned north of Kingsburg SC, leaving behind an abandoned loop. Comments: US 378 serves as a primary access to the Myrtle Beach region. | |||||||||
