Creation: US 412 was conceived by a group of Chambers of Commerce from Missouri, Arkansas and Tennessee in the late 1970s. AASHO turned down a request to add US 412 to the US Highway System in June 1980, but not long after (no documentation yet found about this), US 412 was approved, running from Walnut Ridge AR to Jackson TN. In Tennessee, US 412 was added to I-155 to Dyersburg, then followed US 51 to Fowlkes, then TN 20 southeast to Jackson.

Adjustments: By 1986, US 412 was rerouted to follow US 51 north and east around Dyersburg to a new expressway south and southeast back to where TN 20 (now TN 210) ran.

In Nov 1986 (AASHO), US 412 was added to I-40 around Jackson, then after a brief wrong-way duplex with US 70, follow TN 20 to Hohenwald and TN 99 from Hohenwald through Columbia to I-65. Note that TDOT maps did not show US 412 on I-40 around Jackson but instead followed TN 20.

In Dec 1987, AASHO turned down a request to remove US 412 from I-40 and have it follow TN 20 on its new routing via North Parkway that avoids central Jackson. TDOT maps showed US 412 doing this from at least 1988-2003. The 2005 Madison County map also showed this. AASHO suggested they make North Parkway US 412 Business.
In 1991, US 412 was removed from Bells Hwy northwest of Jackson.
In 1994, US 412 was removed from Cavalier Dr through western Alamo.
Tennessee maps are vague but by 2007 (GMSV), US 412 was actually placed onto I-40 around Jackson, as well as given its bypass of Columbia via US 43. In both cases, US 412 Business designations were left behind.

Comment: US 412 is a major corridor from west of Jackson and had been initially part of a larger I-155 proposal. The road here is expressway with interchanges at major intersections.
Jackson to Columbia is mostly still 2-laned.
US 412 causes consternation amongst the roadgeek community. The number makes no sense and in fact the 1980 rejection by AASHO said so (no relation at all to US 12). But somehow it got approved not long after. Arkansas highway commission minutes from 1979 imply the Chambers of Commerce also came up with the number itself, but given the subsequent requests by Arkansas for US 425 and US 427 (approved as US 371) suggest that maybe it is Arkansas who came up with 412 as well.
