Creation: Appeared in Nov 1926 as an original US route, running from Georgia southwest of Chattanooga to Virginia at Bristol. This was an addition to TN 38, TN 2 from Chattanooga to Knoxville, and TN 1 from Knoxville to Bristol via Rogersville. US 11 entered Virginia on Front St in Bristol.
Adjustments: Tennessee started referring to the Knoxville to Bristol highway as US 11W by the fall of 1927. AASHO approved this change in mid-1929. US 11 was never posted on this section (no US route in TN was posted by then). Today the route is still US 11W except: Holston Dr/Martin Luther King Jr Ave in Knoxville; Loves Creek Rd/Parker Dr just east of I-640; Old Rutledge Pike through John Sevier; Old Rutledge Pike near Three Points; Old Rutledge Pike/Indian Ridge Rd/Maple Dr through Blaine; Geer Ln near Lea Springs; Blaines Chapel Rd at Joppa; Bryan Rd outside Rutledge; Cherry St/Old US 11W out of Rutledge; Old US 11W at Bowen; Un Access Rd (no longer connects to)/Loretta Ln near Mooresburg; Ruritan Rd/Calvary Church Rd near Mooresburg; Old Hwy 11W/Martin Ln through Mooresburg; Clifford Price Loop well east of Mooresburg; Grace Church Rd/6+ miles of Cherokee Lake underwater routing/abandoned routing west of US 11W-25E jct with Main St; Old Lee Hwy in the post lake location of Bean Station; Substation Rd/almost 2 miles of Holston River underwater routing/part of Lakemont Rd/3/4 mile underwater routing; Hollister Mills Rd; Main Blvd through Church Hill; Main St through Mount Carmel; Gills Chapel Church Rd/Old US 11W/Marble Hall Rd and Carpenter Cir west of Rogersville; Main St through Rogersville/Windy Hill east of TN 347; Old Hwy Rd; Sizemore Ln/Carter Valley Loop/Clyde Rd; Bloomer Ln/today's TN 346 through Surgoinsville; Burlington Rd east of SurgoinsvilleNetherland Inn Dr/Ft Henry Dr/Center St in Kingsport; TN 126; State St in Bristol

In 1927 (Nat'l Archive), US 11 was removed from Walker Valley Rd and Worth Ln between Cleveland and Charleston.
In 1929, US 11 was placed on today's Lee Hwy between Chattanooga and Summit. The old route eventually became the TN 2A corridor which was realigned in the 1930s. Today it is TN 17; Campbell St, Lightfoot Mill Rd; TN 317 (except US 11 used abandoned routing between Noah Reid Rd and Bonnyvale Ln); Old Cleveland Pike (now ends at RR track); abandoned routing along north side of the RR; Old Cleveland Pike (just south of Volkswagon Dr interchange with I-75)
In 1929 or 1930, US 11 was rerouted in Chattanooga from Whiteside (this is Broad today)/Main/Cowart/Market/8th/Georgia/McCallie to Whiteside/11th/Central/McCallie.
In 1930 (bridge date), US 11 was removed from Old Niota Rd out of Athens, plus a routing that is now essentially covered by TN 305 and US 11 (plus Club House Dr).
Also about 1930, US 11 was removed from Browder School Rd/Huntsville Hollow Rd, plus Old Loudon Pike into Lenoir City
Also in 1931 (bridge date), US 11 was removed from Old Athens Pike/High St/Mayes Ave (no longer continous)/Old US 11 through Sweetwater; also Old Lee Hwy/Elm St through Philadelphia
In 1931 or 1932, US 11 was extended over TN 1 from Old Stage Rd to the new Lee Hwy routing at Dixie Lee Jct.
In 1931 or 1932, US 11 was placed on current Old Lee Hwy and US 11-64 from Summit through the Ooltewah area. The old route is more Old Cleveland Pike (cut off by TN 317); Ooltewah Cemetary Rd/Jack Cate Rd/Lodge Ln/Railroad Ave/TN 321.

Also in 1931 or 1932, US 11 was rerouted in Knoxville westward via Magnolia, Broadway and Henley St to Main. The old route used Magnolia, Gay, and Main.

In 1933, US 11 was removed from Wauhatchie Pike near the Georgia line.
In 1934, AASHO took away the 11W designation by restoring the route as US 11. At least one prominent commercial map maker did this. However, Tennessee never deposted US 11W.

About 1935, US 11 was removed from the two Kellys Ferry segments west out of Lookout Valley; also removed from today's TN 318 and Old Wauhatchie Pike (no longer continuous)
Also about 1935, the US 11E-11W split was moved to today's Holston Dr/Martin Luther King Jr Ave. The original split was S. Chestnut St at Magnolia Ave.

By 1935, US 11 was removed from Hornberg Dr (no longer connects to)/Old Kingston Pike in Knoxville.
In 1940, US 11 received its current routing through Charleston/Calhoun. The old route used Market St/Water St/remove bridge/Church St/Main St/TN 163/Old US 11
Between 1952-55, US 11 was removed from Lockett Rd/Deane Hill Dr in Knoxville; also Newton Ave/Forest Park Blvd/Old Kingston Pike in Knoxville
About 1953, US 11 was given its bypass of Athens. The old route through town became secondary for a number of years before becoming TN 2 Bus. Today it is unposted US 11 Bus, TN 39, TN 305, and CR 379.

In 1956 (bridge date), US 11 was given one-way splits in Chattanooga. EB used 11th/Central/Bailey/Doods (replacing TN 2A #2) while WB used the original alignment of McCallie/Central/9th/Georgia (this became TN 2 Loop on the TN route log)
Also about 1956, the US 11E-11W split was moved to its current interchange in eastern Knoxville
By 1961, the Chattanooga Splits were just Bailey EB and McCallie WB between Georgia and Dodds
About 1962, US 11 was placed on I-75 between exits 7 and 11 northeast of Chattanooga. This created a split routing with NB using Bonnie Oaks Dr to access I-75 NB, while SB still used Lee Hwy on the west side of I-75 which had a ramp from I-75 SB about 3/4 of a mile north of Exit 7. This left behind Old Lee Hwy on the east side of the interstate.
In 1983, US 11 was rerouted around Cleveland, replacing TN 2 Byp. The old route through town became TN 40 south of downtown and TN 74 north of it.
Between 1981-85, US 11 was placed on one-way splis in central Knoxville - NB used the original Main St routing and SB used Cumberland.
About 2004, US 11 was removed from central Chattanooga entirely by using 20th/23rd/Dodds. The old routing into downtown remains part of US 72 and TN 8. Leaving downtown on its former one-way pairs is no longer in the state highway system.

Also about 2004, US 11 was removed from Lee Hwy north of Exit 7 on I-75 as the far flung ramp was removed and new ramps were installed right at Exit 7.
In 2007, US 11 was changed to leave Broadway at 5th instead of Magnolia in Knoxville.
In 2014, US 11 was rerouted over TN 158 on Neyland Dr, then used Hall of Fame Dr to get back to Magnolia in Knoxville.

Comment: US 11/TN 38's "modern" alignment includes a railroad underpass that is less than two lanes wide.
It appears that US 11 had a railroad underpass of under 8 feet in Ooltewah until it was relocated to I-75.
