Creation: An original state route in 1923, running from TN 1 Sparta north to TN 24 (now Broad St) Cookeville.
Adjustments: In 1925 or 1926, TN 26 was extended from Sparta west replacing TN 54 to TN 24 (now US 70 Bus) Lebanon.
In 1926, US 70 was added to TN 26 from Lebanon to Sparta
By fall 1927, US 70N replaced US 70 along TN 26, though this was not official per AASHO until mid-1929.
In 1931 or 1932, TN 26 from Sparta to Cookeville was renumbered as TN 42. Today this is TN 289; Roberts-Matthews Hwy (except it used Paul Gordon Rd at south end); Old Sparta Rd (no longer reconnects in White County) south of Cookeville; S. Maple Ave and Whitson Ave (used to connect south of Stevens St), plus Proffitt and S Washington Ave all within Cookeville.

In 1935, TN 26 was removed from the US Highway system when Tennessee requested US 70N be routed Lebanon-Cookeville-Crossville instead of Lebanon-Sparta-Crossville.
In 1948, TN 26 was removed from abandoned alignments to the west of 70 approaching Caney Fork River, a little underwater routing, Old State Route 26, Jack Hudson Rd
In 1951, TN 26 was removed from Main St through Smithville, Midway Rd through Midway; east of the Caney Fork River: Ollie Billings/Howard Redmon Rds, Peeled Chestnut Ln, Old Smithville Hwy S, TN 136, Old Smithville Hwy N (cutoff by TN 111), Clarks Mill Dr into Sparta.
In 1954, TN 26 was removed from Main St/High St in Alexandria; Old Liberty Rd, lengthy old Hwy 53 down to Dodd Store; Main St through Liberty and Dowelltown, Old Snow Hill Rd (3 segments)
In 1956, TN 26 was removed from Taylor Rd loop at Cherry Valley; Main St through Watertown; Old Sparta Hwy east of Watertown; Old Alexandria Pike nearby
In Dec 1962 (AASHO), US 70 was reassigned to follow TN 26 in its entirety.
As early as 1960, TN 26 west was removed from Park Ave in Lebanon to end at US 70N east of town.
In 1983, TN 26 was extended around the Lebanon Bypass, replacing TN 24 Byp.
