US 40 ALT #1:
Appeared in late 1955 when US 40-250 was moved onto the Fort Henry Bridge. The Wheeling Suspensioin Bridge was redesignated as US 40 ALT.
I have seen no map evidence or a photo this was posted. It appears explicitly in WV Annual Reports from 1958-64. It is unclear if it was a direct renumbering but by 1980 this became WV 251.
US 40 ALT on Wheeling Suspension Bridge 1964 WV Annual Report US 40 ALT #2: Appears on Gen Drafting maps through much of the 1960s. Followed the newly opened I-70 from today's Exit 5 to Chantal Rd, then used Chantal Rd back to US 40. In 1967, it appears US 40 ALT then stayed with I-70 through the Wheeling Tunnel. Chantal Rd became US 40 Spur. It is unclear when this went away.
