US 476  turned down
Previous US 476's:

US 476: In April 1936, the AASHO Executive Secretary agreed to present a proposal to the entire committee that originated from a real estate firm in Wilmington NC. The proposal was to reroute US 76 at Newberry SC to instead head west through Greenwood, Abbeville, Elberton GA, Athens and ending in Atlanta. They then said Newberry to Chattanooga should become US 376 and that US 476 should be establihed from Athens GA to Chattanooga TN via Gainesville, Ellijay, and Dalton (thus duplexing with US 376 for some of this).
The proposal noted that the North Carolina Highway Department encouraged them to send it to AASHO.
It was unusual that proposals from non-Highway Departments got any consideration. In this case it evidently did. There was no further correspondence for this and obviously this did not happen.
Separately, a few days later the Sumter (SC) Board of Trade also wrote AASHO in April 1936 stating that meetings with town officials along the proposed US 76 and US 476 routings were in favor of it all. The Sumter Board of Trade went on to say that if no new numbers were being allowed, they still wanted the US 76 reroute with a renumbering of the Newberry to Chattanooga highway (no number specified). They did not advocate for US 476.
In this case AASHO told them to go through the SC Highway Department.
