Creation: Appeared in Nov 1926 as an original US route, running from North Carolina east of roan Mountain to US 511 (now Mountain View Rd at Old Elizabethton Hwy) Bluff City. This was an addition to TN 37.
Adjustments: In 1928, US 19 was extended with US 511 to Bristol and into Virginia.
In 1930, US 19 south was truncated to Bluff City (current TN 44/390 jct), as US 19E was assigned to US 19 south to North Carolina. This is still US 19E except: Old Hwy 19E/Buck Creek Rd east of Shell Creek; Carter St, Main St, Conway St and Cloud Land Dr in Roan Mountain; Crabtree Rd and Old Rock Quarry Rd west of Roan Mountain; Little Mountain Church Rd; Holtsclaw Rd; Herman Johnson Loop; J D Whitehead Rd; Old Hwy 19E, Schoolhouse Rd and Dave Simerly Rd in Tiger Valley; Rittertown Rd south of Hampton; Church St and 1st St through Hampton; Mill Pond Rd in the Valley Forge area. The quite winding alignment where it crosses the Doe River twice is completely abandoned; State Line Rd/Johnson Ave/Sycamore St/Broad St through Elizabethton, plus today's TN 400 and Bristol Hwy/Elizabethton Hwy/Old Elizabethton hwy to Bluff City.
In 1931 or 1932, US 19 south was extended over US 19W to the new US 19E-19W split in Hillcrest (current TN 44/Elizabethton Hwy jct).

By 1934, US 19 was removed from Avoca Dr in southwestern Bristol
In 1935, AASHO tried to get Tennessee to renumber US 19W as US 19. Tennessee declined to do this, but this change showed up on some commercial maps 1935-37.

In 1952, US 19 was put on one-way splits in Bristol with NB using 4th St NB (now Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Dr) to State St westward and SB used 5th St SB.
Between 1965-69, US 19 was moved to the Bristol Bypass and a one-way pair using State St WB and Shelby St/4th St EB, replacing TN 34 Byp. The old route used Bluff City Hwy, Edgemont Ave, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Dr, Alabama Ave (no longer connects to), one way pair of 4th (now part of MLK Jr Dr)/5th Ave and State St

In 1975, AASHO recommended changing US 19E back to US 19 and eliminating US 19W but it is unclear if this was actually presented to Tennessee.
Around 1977, US 19 south was truncated to the current US 11E-19 and TN 394 interchange (US 19E was using current TN 390).
Between 1982-85, US 19 south was extended over US 19W to the relocated US 19E-19W split (now former TN 44) southwest of Hillcrest.
About 1990, US 19 was truncated north slightly to the newly constructed US 19E routing where it ends now.

Comment: Given that US 19W overlays a lot of routes and its solo segment is gnarly (and bypassed by nearby I-26/US 23), US 19W should be decommissioned and US 19 put back on US 19E
