Creation: Appeared in Virginia in 1943 or 1944 when US 522 was extended south from Hancock, MD replacing VA 522. From Sperryville to Culpeper this was also an addition VA 3.
|
Adjustments:In April 1944 (CTB), US 522 was removed from the Chester Gap loop. In Aug 1950 (CTB), US 522 was placed on one-way splits in Winchester. NB US 522 on Cameron had not been primary up to this point. In Feb 1951 (CTB), US 522 was removed from SR 719 in Spotsylvania/Louisa County.
Posted: Fully posted Cutouts remaining in 2012 in Culpeper, Front Royal, and Winchester. An error VA 522 cutout existed just north of VA 37 in the early 1990s but is long gone now. US 522 is on sub-optimal alignments from VA 6 to US 33; although on good straight alignment from VA 208 to Culpeper, the road seems narrow. North of Winchester US 522 provides easy access to I-70 in Hancock, MD and is a viable alternative to I-81 to Hagerstown to pick up I-70. | |||||||||||
