1931 ROUTE LOG
US 11, US 11W, US 11E Begin, US 19 NB, US 411: 0 - 0

TN STATE LINE: 0.3 - 0.5
US 321 #1: Appeared in May 1930 (AASHTO) as a new US route from Chester SC to Bristol. US 321 followed TN 34 up Pennsylvania Ave then cut west on State St to end at US 11-411 Piedmont St. Thus, US 321 NB was in Virginia.
In June 1932 (AASHO), US 321 was for some reason replaced by an expanded US 421. Today this part of State St is not a primary route.
In June 1951, AASHO rejected a proposed extension of US 321 from Boone NC to Mountain City TN with US 421, then north via TN/VA 91 to Damascus, with US 58 to Abingdon, with US 19 to Hansonville, over then via then-VA 64 and VA 70 through St Paul, Norton and Appalachia to use VA/KY 160 over to Cumberland KY on its way to Lexington. Not long after, US 58 ALT was assigned to a large chunk of the Virginia portion of the rejected US 321 routing.
Despite its brief existence from 1930-32, it was posted. See the header photo at USends.com, which also shows the back side of shileds indicating US 321 was posted in Virginia
