Between 1929-31, WV 56 north was extended east with US 50 to Blueville, then north replacing the short-lived WV 86 to end at WV 73 (now CR 73) below Morgantown.
About 1933, WV 56 was rerouted from Durbin the Virginia line by using new alignment to Bartow then replace WV 42 to Thronwood, then southeast as new construction to the Virginia line. The old route became CR 3 (the east end of CR 3 has been rerouted to meet US 250 inside West Virginia - CR 3 used to meet US 250 about 3/4 mile into Virginia.
In 1935, WV 56 became US 250 from Philippi to Virginia and US 119 from Morgantown to Philippi. WV 56 #2: Appeared about 1937 as a renumbering of WV 33, running from US 21 (now CR 21) Sandyville east past WV 2 (now WV 62) Ravenswood to the Ohio River ferry.
It is unclear when WV 56 west was truncated to WV 2 (now WV 68) instead of going to the ferry, which was in operation up until the early 1980s. County maps through 1949 showed it to the ferry.
About 1971, WV 56 east was truncated to I-77, leaving behind CR 56.
About 1977, WV 56 was renumbered as WV 2 which was also removed from Ravenswood. The route into town became CR 2/19.
