Creation: Appeared in 1941 as a renumbering of WV 55 running generally as it does today. This is the 2nd WV 23.
Adjustments: About 1969, WV 23 was extended east out of salem replacing some of US 50 back out to the Corridor D routing of US 50. WV 23 had ended at CR 50/28 Main St Salem
In 2003 or 2004, WV 23 east was truncated to US 50 northwest of Salem, leaving behind CR 50/73.
Improvements: Fully paved upon designation; no multilane segments

WV 23 #1: Appeared 1922 as new primary routing running from WV 28 Moorefield east to Wardensville then northeast to Virginia via Yellow Spring.
In 1941, WV 23 was renumbered as WV 55 from Moorefield to Baker, then WV 259 from Baker to Virginia. Today it is the lengthy CR 55/20 from Moorefield to Wardensville except for CR 55/2 at Baker; plus WV 259 north out of Wardensville.
