Creation: SC 462 appeared in 1942 as new primary routing, running from SC 170 east then south to SC 46 Bluffton.
Adjustments: In 1956, SC 462 east was truncated to the current US 278/SC 46 jct. South to Bluffton became part of SC 46.

In 1958, SC 462 west was extended north with SC 170 to Jasper at its new split towards Beaufort, then replaced SC 170 through Coosawatchie to end at SC 128 (now US 278) Gillisonville.
In 1960, SC 462 west was extended with SC 128 then west replacing S-27-26 through Pineland to end at US 321 Robertville. Some of this had been part of SC 367 prior to 1947.

In 1965, SC 462 east was truncated to US 278 (now SC 336) Old House. The old route south to SC 170 became part of US 278.
In 1998, SC 462 east was re-extended back to SC 170 Jasper, replacing a rerouted US 278.
