SC 54: Appeared about 1926 as new primary routing, running from SC 3 (now US 76 Bus) Sumter east to SC 4 (now US 301) Turbeville.
In 1929, SC 54 was extended east as new primary routing to end at SC 341 Lake City.

In 1939, SC 54 was extended east into Lake City with SC 341 and US 52, then east as new primary routing to end at SC 51 Salem.
Between 1943-47, SC 54 was straightened out in the area west of Lynches River leaving behind abandoned routing and some of today's S-21-461.

In late 1951, SC 54 was renumbered as US 378 except at its very western end it became S-43-723 Plowden Mill Rd and an extended S-43-82 Boulevard Rd. Today it is still US 378 except in Sumter it is now part of SC 763 and in Lake City it is US 378 Business.
