US 5  Practical jokes are fun

US 5: On Feb 2, 1958 South Carolina submitted an application to AASHO to renumber US 17 as US 5. In this application it stated that this was to be in conjunction with other states to extend US 5 from New Haven CT to Punta Gorda FL, giving a single US route number from Canada to Punta Gorda.
This would've resulted in US 13 in Virginia being replaced with US 5 from Norfolk to Maryland and US 17 south being truncated to Norfolk. It is unclear what would've happened to US 13 from Norfolk to Goldsboro NC.
On Feb 14, 1958 South Carolina submitted a change request to the application which would not have affect what happened in Virginia (though would have extended both US 15 and US 701 in South Carolina).
It is hard to understand why South Carolina would do this without explicit buy in from the 9 or 10 other states that would've needed to also send in an application. SC's application said, "The request is dependent upon the other states involved making application for the route changes". I am eternally curious what was discussed at some gathering that made SC think this was a thing other states wanted to do.
There is no AASHO response beyond acknowledging receipt of the applications on the AASHO database, but it does appear on the July 1958 AASHO meeting (held in Charleston SC, incidentally) with "no action taken" with the note that other states' applications were needed to consider the request.
