I-685 appeared in November 2021 when the Infrastructure Bill was signed into law by President Biden.
I-685 will be placed on US 421 from Greensboro to Sanford (a lot of this is freeway already), then on new built interstate to I-95 in the Dunn area. In June 2022, the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization adopted a plan to continue I-685 to Wilmington along the US 421 corridor. Perhaps it would be better to have I-685 cut over to I-40 at Newton Grove instead of building a long stretch of new interstate that is very close to I-40 for 80+ miles? It is also a little odd to me that I-685 wouldn't tie in to I-295 at Fayetteville. |
