I-440  16 miles
The Road: Begins at I-40/US 1-64 southwest of Raleigh (Wake County) and loops around the west, north, and east of Raleigh to end at I-40/US 64 near Garner (Wake County).
Towns and Attractions: Wake Co.: Raleigh
History:
I-440 was created in July 1991 (NCDOT) as an addition to I-40 along its Beltline routing, plus replaced I-40 Business (really!) on the rest of the loop all the way around Raleigh. This included a concurrency with US 1.
In November 2008 (NCDOT), I-440 was removed from its I-40 concurrence.

Comments: I-440 has had many asthetic features added to it on much of its current routing.
The Raleigh Beltline has been a long-term source of route confusion. All of Raleigh's routes except NC 54 have been added and removed from it at some point.
For a long time, the section between exits 1-3 were mostly still just posted as US 1 but more I-440 shields have come into place.
