Creation: WV 817 was designated about 2008 as a renumbering of US 35, running from US 60 St. Albans to US 35 just past WV 869 Buffalo Bridge. This is the only WV 817.
Adjustments: About 2012, WV 817 was extended north with US 35, then replaced more US 35 to its current end near Henderson.
Improvements: Upon designation, WV 817 was fully paved; no multilane segments.
Comment: WV 817 does not have a direct connection to I-64 Exit 44 but there is a connector road in place for this purpose.
