Creation: WV 82 was designated between 1990-92 running the way it does now. This was an upgrade to Nicholas CR 1 and Webster CR 30 and 30/1. This is the 3rd WV 82.

Comment: WV 82's brief re-incursion into Nicholas County is unsigned.

WV 82 #1: Appeared 1928 (WVDOT annual report) as new primary routing running from the Virginia line at Pocahontas southeastward back into Virginia near Fall Mills. There was also a very brief incursion into/out of Virginia near the north end of the Mercer County segment.
Between 1947-49, WV 82 was renumbered as part of WV 85.

WV 82 #2: Appeared between 1947-49 as a renumbering of WV 85 from US 19-21 (now WV 16) Fayetteville through the New River Gorge to US 60 Lookout.
About 1983, WV 82 was downgraded to CR 82. This road passes underneath the US 19 New River Gorge Bridge several times.
