Old Unisigns of District 2

This page highlights the old unisigns used by District 2. It is unknown how old these signs actually are. A collection of Michael Summa pics of these from about 1991 show they looked really old then, too (click here to access Mr. Summa's work). Here are the unisigns that have made it to at least 2006. All pictures taken by Mapmikey unless indicated otherwise.
VDOT's District 2 consists of the following counties: Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke

Approaching US 11 from SR 606 eastbound north of Troutville.   This one is visible from I-81 NB in the winter. Taken 1/26/07.

From SR 641 after the descent of Christianburg Mountain.   SR 641 was the original US 11 routing down the mountain. Taken 3/11/06.

At Patrick SR 770.   This stretch of US 58 had a few sets of these older unisigns. Taken 7/16/06.

Approaching US 58 on SR 799 near Meadows of Dan.   This is the endpoint of old VA 102. Taken 7/16/06.

This set is at SR 632 just east of Meadows of Dan,   Taken 2/13/09.

This set is at SR 764 west of Vesta,   Taken 2/13/09.

This set is on SR 615 approaching US 221 in Floyd, and was still there in Dec. 2008.   Taken 10/26/06.

This set is on SR 768 at US 221 in Willis,   Taken 12/5/08.

This set is on SR 638 EB at US 221 in Dugspur,   Taken 2/13/09.

Not technically a unisign but in the same font/style. IIRC this was just inside the Floyd County Line.   Taken 12/8/07.

This set has a modern patch of shields on it. This is at an old alignment of VA 8.   Taken 12/8/07.

A classic looking set at SR 705.   Taken 12/8/07.

In the Union Hall area on one of the old VA 40 loops.   Taken 7/15/06.

This set is about a mile east of VA 122 in the Rocky Mount area.   The stretch of VA 40 east from Rocky Mount had a number of VA 40 unisigns. Taken 7/16/06.

This set is at SR 660 SB (old VA 40 loop) in Penhook,   Taken 1/16/10.

This set is at SR 626 NB in Penhook,   Taken 1/16/10.

This set is at SR 945 SB in Union Hall,   Taken 1/16/10.

Not technically a unisign but in the same font/style. This was the reassurance leaving the Blue Ridge Pkwy area.   Taken 12/8/07.

Approaching VA 61 on SR 724 west of Narrows.   SR 724 was originally VA 61's routing and is having a bridge rebuilt behind me. Taken 3/10/07.

Even rarer is a set of signs with this old, non-reflective font that is NOT a unisign.   This is on the north access road to VA 61 at the New River Bridge near Narrows. Taken 3/10/07.

IIRC, this set is on SR 724 near Pipers Gap.   Taken 4/13/07.

This set is on SR 746 Sylvatus and was still present in Jan 2009.   Taken 5/18/07.

This set is on SR 637 Sylvatus and was still present in Jan 2009.   Taken 5/18/07.

The only VA 103 set I found was located at the end of SR 773, old VA 104.   Taken 4/13/07.

A couple years later here is the same set, only nearly all the dull beige has worn away.   Taken 1/21/09.

This set is on SR 638 in Sedalia.   Taken 1/20/07.

This set is on SR 634 near Burnt Chimney.   Taken 1/21/07.
