About 1957, US 701 was given its Tabor City bypass. The old route through town may have been secondary for a while (per Columbus County NC maps) but by 1962 was US 701 Business. This is the 1st of 2 US 701 Business routes.

Improvements: Fully paved from inception with no multilane sections.
Comment: US 701 Business only 1 of 2 SC Business routes to cross a state line (US 25 Bus in North Augusta is the other).
This is one of the shortest primary designations in South Carolina.
