Creation: | About 1957, US 701 was given its Tabor City bypass. The old route through town may have been secondary for a while (per Columbus County NC maps) but by 1962 was US 701 Business. This is the 1st of 2 US 701 Business routes. Adjustments: None Improvements: Fully paved from inception with no multilane sections. Comment: US 701 Business only 1 of 2 SC Business routes to cross a state line (US 25 Bus in North Augusta is the other). This is one of the shortest primary designations in South Carolina.

US 701 Bus #2: Appeared about 1967 as a renumbering of mainline US 701 through Mt. Pleasant
In 1992, US 17 Business was redesignated as SC 703 on its western half and I-526 Bus on its eastern half. US 701 Business used Coleman Blvd and Georgetown Rd through Mt Pleasant. By the late 1970s, there were very few 701 postings along the business route.
