SC 478 #1: Appeared in 1974 as newly constructed routing around the southwest of Aiken, running from SC 421 southeast to SC 302.
In 1987, SC 478 was renumbered as part of SC 118.

SC 478 #2: Appeared about 1989 when current I-77 was finished between SC 48 and US 76-378. When the freeway from I-26 to SC 48 was finished a couple years earlier, it was signed as only "TO SC 48" or "TO I-26". This had been designated as I-326 earlier.
It is unclear if SC 478 was assigned to the freeway when it was opened from US 76-378 to SC 12.
In 1996, SC 478 became part of I-77.
SC 478 did not appear on state official maps but did appear on Richland County maps.
In the field SC 478 was signed as TEMP SC 478.
