Creation: SC 56 appeared about 1926 as new primary routing, running from SC 392 (now SC 39) north to SC 19 (now SC 215) Pauline. This is the only SC 56.
Adjustments: In 1939, SC 56 was straightened out in Newberry County, leaving behind what is now abandoned routing in the Mudlick area, S-36-22 and S-36-58. The S-36-22 piece later became SC 561 for a time.

I believe that SC 56 was moved from Musgrove Rd to Broad/Willard/Musgrove north of US 76 Clinton.
In 1949, SC 56 was extended north replacing US 176 from Pauline to end at the new US 176 location on Henry St (or possibly ended at US 29 Main St - maps are vague).

In 1960, SC 56 was extended north again over more US 176 through Spartanburg and Hearon Circle to its current end at the relocated US 176.

Between 1990-96, SC 56 was placed on a bypass south around Clinton, leaving behind SC 56 Business. The full Clinton bypass was actually built by 1985, but it was P-3002 at first. Official maps do not differentiate when it changed from a P route to SC 56-72 Bypass.

Improvements: In 1933, SC 56's routing in Spartanburg County was paved.
In 1939, SC 56 was paved everywhere except Clinton south to the Newberry County Line.
SC 56 was fully paved in 1941.
SC 56 was multilaned when placed on Church St. Spartanburg in 1960.
SC 56 was multilaned from US 221 NB to US 176 in 1970.
SC 56 was multilaned from US 221 SB to SC 295 between 1998-2001.
Comment: SC 56 serves Croft State Park, as well as back way from Spartanburg to Clinton.
SC 56 is blown off by the new I-85 in Spartanburg.
