SC 40: An original state highway that ran from the ferry landing to Charleston in Mt Pleasant north through Georgetown, Conway, and Green Sea before heading into North Carolina towards Cerro Gordo.
In 1925 or 1926, SC 40 was rerouted at Green Sea to instead head northeast to Tabor City NC. The old route north became secondary (although was SC 724 in the 1940s) and is now S-26-33.

In 1929, SC 40 was extended over a new bridge into Charleston, using Lee St to end at then-US 17/78-SC 2 King St.
In 1933, SC 40 was renumbered in its entirety to US 701. Today it is Lee St in Downtown Charleston; the 1929 bridge was closed in 2005 and torn down; SC 703 into Mt.Pleasant, I-526 Bus (although there is an "Old Georgetown Rd" that was likely SC 40); US 17 to Georgetown minus a couple minor reroutings; US 701 to Conway; SC 905 in Conway; a piece of US 501 Bus; US 701 to Bayboro, all of SC 410.
