A third one for good measure. These looked just like this in 1991.   Taken 3/1/08.
Here is a faded rectangle with different-sized numerals.   Taken 3/10/07.
Just entering into Blackstone is an older unisign paired with an even older cutout banner.   Turns out there was another one of these on the entry to Blackstone on the other side of town. Taken 2/15/08.
VA 40 west at US 460 Business in Blackstone.   This assembly was removed when I visited in Feb 2008. Taken 1/30/06.

This is on a side street in Buena Vista.   Taken 1/26/06.
This is one of my favorite finds. This is SR 601 in Gloucester County a little east of US 17. This may be the last white border SR sign in Eastern Virginia and may be leftover from when this was still part of VA 198.   Taken 2/19/06.
All the original BGS signs had been replaced on VA 195, except two US 1-301 assemblies.   Taken 5/5/06.
Here is the other one.   Taken 5/5/06.
Here is a vintage I-64 shield, on SR 880 (old US 60) near California. This shield probably dates back to the opening of I-64 through here.   Taken 12/8/07.
This is on US 11 northbound near VA 365 in Wytheville. These haven't changed much since Michael Summa photographed these 15 years earlier.   Taken 3/10/07.
This is in downtown Petersburg. A very rare I-85 shield with "Virginia" on it.   Taken 4/24/07.
This ancient shield is on VA 197 eastbound ending at US 1-301. Still there in March 2008.   Taken 4/26/06.
This peeling shield is on VA 236 east approaching VA 241.   Taken 5/25/06.
A Richmond unisign assembly way, way past its prime.   Taken 3/22/08.
This assembly is in Exmore. This font/appearance was what many district 5 signs looked like in the 70s.   Taken 4/26/07.
This is on Monument Ave westbound just past the I-195 overpass. Still there in March 2008.   Taken 4/26/06.
This is on Laburnum Ave westbound just past the VA 197 turn onto Saunders. Still there in March 2008.   Taken 4/26/06.
On a side street in Buena Vista.   Taken 1/26/06.

This is in Union Hall (Franklin County) and is an old alignment of VA 40.   Taken 7/15/06.
This is on US 17 northbound in Bealeton. This sign was replaced in late 2007.   Taken 11/10/06.
This is on SR 626 (old VA 105) in Critz. Patrick County has a number of these type SR shields left.   Taken 10/26/06.
On VA 102 south of Bluefield. This set probably predates the US 460 bypass just ahead.   Taken 7/21/07.
A bonus older sign in Maryland. This is at the main exit of NIST in Gaithersburg. The shield is pretty old, but the white directional banners might go back to when I-270 was US 240.   Taken 7/10/07.
This is on F047 (old VA 100) southbound just past where VA 100 joins I-81 near Dublin.   Taken 3/14/08.
This is VA 99 northbound in Pulaski.   Taken 3/14/08.

This is just of US 21-221 just outside Independence. Such a huge sign pole for a teeny shield!   Taken 4/13/07.
Reassurance on SR 789 (old VA 179) leaving US 13 BUsiness in Olney.   Taken 4/26/07.

This is VA 16's original North Carolina border crossing. A very rare example of this generation of SR shield remaining in Virginia.   Taken 5/18/07.
This is on VA 178 Belle Haven. Another kind of rare version of SR shield.   Taken 4/26/07.
This is probably the oldest SR shield left standing in Virginia. The sun angle prevented a head-on shot but I assure you the numbers (which should be a 701 pointing left) were not visible. This is at the former end of VA 124 in West Point which became SR 701 in the 40's.   Taken 10/27/07.
This is on US 220 Business nearing downtown Roanoke.   Taken 10/26/06.
This is on US 11/VA 254 approaching US 250 in Staunton.   Taken 5/27/06.
This is on US 1 southbound. This sign hasn't been correct since 1971.   Taken 5/25/06.
This is heading east just after US 13 Bypass in Eastville on T631 (old VA 185). This sort of T-shield is very rare now.   Taken 4/26/07.
A second example exists leaving US 13 Business.   Taken 4/26/07.
This on SR 764 (old VA 177) southbound at VA 316.   Taken 4/26/07.

A fuzzy look at US 11 and VA 8 white border shields in Christiansburg.   Taken 3/11/06.
A really well-preserved example of the 60s style white border shield. This is on an old "neighborhood clover" as part of the junction with VA 120. This may be the last classic white border sign in Northern Virginia.   Taken 8/30/07.
This is just inside Waynesboro on VA 254 east and is left over from when Waynesboro hadn't annexed out this far.   Taken 3/18/06.
This is on a former VA 8 alignment in Floyd County.   Taken 12/8/07.
This is from the other direction on old VA 8.   Taken 12/8/07.
This is on SR 890 (old VA 109) in Floyd County. The Blue Ridge Pkwy is right behind me.   Taken 12/8/07.
Here SR 637 scoots off in the other direction.   Taken 12/8/07.
