The first US 701-A appeared between 1948 and 1950, when US 701 was rebuilt on a new alignment in eastern Clinton. 701-A used Lisbon and Beamer Sts through Clinton. In 1960, US 701-A was renumbered to US 701 Business. Today the route carries no primary number..
The second US 701-A appeared between 1953 and 1955, when US 701 was given a newly constructed bypass of Whiteville. Madison St became US 701-A. In 1960 this was renumbered as US 701 Business, which remains today. The 3rd US 701-A appeared between 1957 and 1958 as a US 701 bypass of Tabor City was built to the east. This US 701-A ran along 6th Street and Railroad St. This routing became US 701 Business in 1960, as it remains today.
